How to Tell If On Cloud Shoes Are Real

To spot fake On Cloud shoes, read the inner size label first. The counterfeit here states US W8, UK 5.5, EU 39 and JP 25 together, and On never pairs EU 39 with UK 5.5. The On Cloudtilt is the Swiss brand's lifestyle CloudTec shoe, a sculpted midsole of open pods under a knit upper, and it retails at $170. It was the first On silhouette built around CloudTec Phase for walking rather than running, and it sells at a volume that pulled it into the counterfeit market quickly.

How the Cloudtilt Differs From the Cloud 5

The Cloudtilt is a distinct model with its own article code family, and its name is printed on the heel lining. The Cloud 5 sits on a different family entirely. If the tongue and heel say Cloudtilt but the code is formatted like a Cloud 5 code, that contradiction is the finding. Why On Cloud Shoes Are Heavily Counterfeited

On went from a specialist running brand to a mainstream one in about three years, and the Cloudtilt carried it. A $170 shoe recognizable from its midsole alone, bought by people who have never owned the brand, is close to an ideal counterfeiting target.

The CloudTec midsole is the most copied feature and the easiest to approximate, because a mold producing roughly the right pods reads as correct in photographs. That pushes counterfeit production toward getting the silhouette right and the paperwork wrong.

Written authentication coverage for On barely exists, and the queries are answered by social video. The OECD's 2025 report on global trade in fakes counts clothing, footwear and leather goods together as the largest share of seized goods worldwide, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes the same pattern year after year.

Inner Size and Article Code Label

The counterfeit On Cloudtilt label states US W8, UK 5.5, EU 39 and JP 25 on one row, and that combination cannot exist. On's published women's conversions run US 8 to UK 6, EU 39 and JP 25. The UK value does not match the EU value beside it.

• The size row contradicts itself. On the counterfeit, US 8 and EU 39 and JP 25 are consistent but UK 5.5 is not. Check it against On's own size guide in under a minute.
• Article code format. The authentic label carries 3WE10870553, the 3WE prefix plus eight digits On uses for women's Cloudtilt. The counterfeit carries 59.98902, a dotted format from a different On code family. Wrong family for the model on the tongue.
• The French origin line. Both labels print MADE IN VIETNAM and HECHO EN VIETNAM correctly. On the third line the authentic reads FABRIQUÉ AU VIETNAM and the counterfeit FABRIQUE AU VEITNAM, losing the acute accent and transposing two letters in the country name.
• An extra code up the edge. The counterfeit carries a short vertical code up its right margin. The authentic label has nothing there.

Photograph the whole label in one frame rather than cropping to the code. The contradiction lives between the size fields, so all of them have to be visible together.

CloudTec Pods and Midsole

On an authentic Cloudtilt each CloudTec opening is a tapered teardrop narrowing toward the front of the shoe, with a defined internal shelf and a crisp lip. The counterfeit openings are blunter, with a smooth ramp inside and a rolled lip.

• Opening shape. The authentic pods taper along their length, so each opening has a clearly narrow end. The counterfeit openings hold one width throughout.
• The lip. The authentic opening finishes in a crisp edge where the wall meets the void. The counterfeit lip is rolled over and thicker.
• Lobe definition. On the authentic midsole the material between pods swells into distinct rounded lobes. On the counterfeit they are shallower.
• CLOUDTEC PHASE placement. The authentic emboss sits close under the SWISS ENGINEERING line. On the counterfeit it drops lower and back, opening a gap.

Look into the pods from directly behind the heel, level with the ground. The taper and the internal shelf flatten out and disappear from every other viewpoint.

Heel Counter and Swiss Cross

The authentic Cloudtilt heel closes with a bonded center join showing no thread and no needle holes. The counterfeit runs a visible line of perforations down the heel, through the overlay panel and into the knit above.

• Center join. The authentic heel is a smooth vertical crease with no stitching. The counterfeit's perforation line is visible at normal viewing distance.
• Overlay top edge. The authentic panel's upper boundary sweeps across the heel in a smooth arc. On the counterfeit it is flatter.
• SWISS ENGINEERING placement. The authentic text is small and tucked to the lower right of the overlay, close to the flag. On the counterfeit it is larger, wider spaced and further from it.
• Flag proportion. The authentic flag block is a squared rectangle with cross arms of matching width. On the counterfeit it is taller than wide and the vertical arm runs longer.
• Logo emboss depth. The authentic heel mark is a shallow tonal emboss with a fine even outline. The counterfeit is deeper, thicker and varies in stroke width.

Run a fingernail down the centre of the heel. A bonded join stays smooth and a stitched one catches, and needle holes show under raking light even when the thread colour matches.

Insole Stamp and Mould Codes

Turn both insoles over. The authentic pair carries a four-line stamped block near the toe holding a mould number and two size-range lines, with mirrored left and right suffixes. The counterfeit insoles carry no stamp there at all.

• The mould block. The authentic stamp runs four lines, opening with a mould reference and closing with two size-range rows for men's and women's fittings.
• Left and right suffixes. The authentic block ends in a different two-letter suffix on each insole. With no block, the counterfeit insoles are interchangeable.
• Logo size and position. The authentic mark is embossed small and sits back toward the arch. The counterfeit is larger relative to insole width and pushed toward the toe.
• Ring geometry. The authentic ring is a true circle with an even stroke and a square tab standing clear of it. On the counterfeit it runs out of round, thickens at the lower left, and the tab merges raggedly.

Pull both insoles out and lay them toe to toe. The block is faint, so tilt them until the light rakes across the stamp rather than lighting it flat.

Toe Box and Lace Window

The authentic Cloudtilt lace window is bound with small even stitches following a smooth continuous curve. The counterfeit uses fewer, longer stitches, the run kinks where it changes direction, and the slot is shorter with a wavy lower edge.

• Bind stitch pitch. Count the stitches along the window edge. The authentic run is dense and regular, the counterfeit sparser with longer stitches.
• Curve of the run. The authentic bind follows one smooth arc end to end. The counterfeit kinks where the direction changes abruptly.
• Slot length and edge. The authentic opening is longer with a crisp straight lower boundary. The counterfeit is shorter and waves.
• Mesh distribution. The counterfeit shows a wedge of enlarged apertures on the lateral toe. The authentic toe holds one uniform size there.
• Toe profile. The authentic toe tapers to a narrower point in plan view. The counterfeit is fuller, and its sole bumper wraps higher.

Follow the binding stitch all the way round the window with your eye instead of checking one spot. Pitch changes only reveal themselves over a length.

Sockliner Mesh and Edge Stitch

Lift the sockliner and look at its edge under a macro lens. On an authentic Cloudtilt the mesh top cloth is bound to the foam with an even overlock stitch that lies flat, and the mesh floats run as continuous plied diagonals. The counterfeit stitch pitch wanders and its floats break into short strokes.

• Overlock pitch. The authentic stitches sit at one repeating interval down the whole edge. On the counterfeit the interval opens and closes, and neighbouring loops touch in places.
• How the loops sit. The authentic thread pulls flat against the foam. The counterfeit loops stand proud of the edge and cast their own shadow.
• Float continuity. The authentic mesh yarns run unbroken across several rows. On the counterfeit each float ends within its own row, reading as separate tick marks.
• Yarn twist. The authentic strands are visibly plied, the twist readable along their length. The counterfeit strands read as flat single filaments.
• Foam edge behind the stitch. The authentic foam is cut clean and the same tone along its length. The counterfeit edge is ragged and shows loose fibre caught in the stitch.

Bend the sockliner gently so its edge opens toward you, then hold a phone macro right against it. The overlock stitch does not resolve at normal reading distance.

Red Flags That End the Inspection

A size row that contradicts itself ends the inspection. If the label pairs a US and an EU value with a UK value matching neither, the label was composed rather than issued.

• An impossible size row. Check all four values against On's published conversions. One mismatch is enough.
• An article code in the wrong format for the model. A Cloudtilt code begins 3WE or 3ME plus eight digits. A dotted decimal code on a shoe whose heel lining says CLOUDTILT is an internal contradiction.
• A misspelled origin line. FABRIQUE AU VEITNAM is not a variant spelling, and the correct lines above it rule out a general printing fault.
• Perforations down the heel center. The authentic heel join is bonded. A stitch line there is a different construction, not a different batch.
• Blank insole undersides. A missing mould block is a structural omission, and it takes the left and right identification with it.

What Current Superfakes Get Right

The counterfeit here is competent where photography can judge it. The pod count and midsole massing are close, the CLOUDTEC PHASE and SWISS ENGINEERING embosses sit roughly right, the Swiss flag block is present, the tongue and heel carry the correct wordmarks, and the label reproduces all four size systems and the on-running.com address line.

What current On counterfeits still get wrong is anything that has to be internally consistent rather than merely present. A size row has to agree with itself across four systems, an article code has to match the model named on the same shoe, and a translated line has to be spelled correctly in all three languages.

The country of manufacture is a non-tell. Both shoes state MADE IN VIETNAM, in the same three languages. Anyone telling you that authentic On shoes are Vietnamese and counterfeits are not is giving you a check that fails on the pair above. What You Can Check Yourself and What You Cannot

The three label checks transfer completely through a written guide, because each has a definite right answer: the size row must be internally consistent, the article code must match the model's code family, and the French line must be spelled correctly. The insole block and heel seam are almost as transferable, being present or absent.

The knit, the pod geometry and the toe profile need reference experience. Continuous plied diagonals are only actionable once you have seen how much variation On's own production allows across colorways and factories. Treat those three as corroboration, not the decision.

There is no official On anti-counterfeiting page, so do not trust a guide that cites one. What On does publish is a size chart, and that single document exposes the strongest tell here.
