How to Authenticate a Balenciaga City Bag: Real vs Fake
Last Updated on:
To authenticate a Balenciaga City bag, work from the outside in. Check the overall shape, the corners, the stitching, and how the leather feels and folds. Then check the inside pocket label, the zipper pulls, the handles, the rivets and buckles, and last the interior tag number.
No single point decides it. A fake can pass one or two checks, so compare each one against the photos below.
A single letter on the interior tag gives the season. Our free Balenciaga serial number checker reads it, and shows all three passes of the alphabet so you can see which year is actually yours.

[ open ]The Overall Look
The first noticeable difference in a replica bag is its shape. An authentic Balenciaga City bag is not a perfect rectangle. It should have slightly rounded edges, as shown in the left picture.
The half-circle section below the authentic zipper has a more defined outline compared to the counterfeit version. Additionally, the rounded triangles on the bag’s corners are smaller on the fake model.

The Corners
The corner pullers on a fake bag are often larger than they should be. They are supposed to be narrow and thin, as shown in the left image.
The leather outline around the puller is also smaller on the fake bag, whereas the authentic version has a more substantial section around it. The same applies to the zipper outline, which is more prominent on the real Balenciaga bag.

The Stitching and Details
Taking a closer look reveals differences not immediately apparent in the overall inspection.
The first thing you’ll notice is the stitching. On the authentic bag it’s seamless, while on the fake the stitches are highly visible. This not only cheapens the look but also indicates a shorter lifespan, as the stitching is sloppy and done with thin thread that won’t hold the pieces together well.
Additionally, the details on the original bag are delicately cut, while on the fake, they have harsh, uneven shapes.
The authentic bag on the left still carries its small hanging mirror in a leather frame. Balenciaga made this removable mirror part of the City, and fakes copy it, so having one proves nothing on its own.

The Leather and Fold
When folding an authentic Balenciaga City bag, it should fold easily without requiring extra force, thanks to the soft leather.
However, as seen in the right picture, the fake bag remains stiff and doesn't fold as easily. The bottom of the authentic bag is larger with straight, flawless edges, while the replica has noticeable issues with measurement and detail accuracy.
Look at the surface too. Classic City leather is distressed and matte, while counterfeits tend to use a shinier, stiffer leather with no softening.

The Inside Pocket Label
On the replica, the leather label at the inside pocket is significantly larger than on the authentic bag, indicating poor attention to detail.
The stitching, which should be seamless, is instead highly visible, asymmetrical, and sloppy. Additionally, the letters on the fake label are much larger and thicker than they should be.
Then look at the edge of the inside zip pocket, just above the label. On older authentic City bags it is trimmed with leather, which keeps the zipper from catching the lining. On many fakes the zipper tape is sewn straight onto the fabric, as in the right picture.

The Zipper
When inspecting the authentic zipper, you'll notice how straight the teeth are and how closely they align, allowing the puller to glide smoothly.
In contrast, the fake zipper has crooked teeth that are spaced further apart, making it difficult for the puller to move. The fake puller itself is also bulkier than the authentic one on the left.
Lastly, the stitching on the replica is once again sloppy and asymmetrical, unlike the neat, symmetrical stitching on the authentic zipper.
Turn the pull over. City bags mostly use Lampo zippers, and the mark on the back of the pull has changed over the years. Older bags carry the Lampo name, usually embossed in underlined italics. Later Lampo pulls carry a single capital B instead, and recent ones a double B. The marking should fit the season on the interior tag. Some replicas use real Lampo zippers, so a Lampo pull proves nothing on its own.

The Handles
Authentic Balenciaga City bag handles are flatter than those on replicas, making them more comfortable to carry on your shoulder.
The rope wrapped around the handles is also much narrower on the authentic bag. The counterfeit version, however, uses bulkier details, compromising both style and practicality.

The Rivets and Buckles
On an authentic City the notch in each handle rivet is a rounded U with polished edges. Fakes often cut a square or shallow half-moon notch and leave the metal rough. Bags made until about 2005 had rounded, unnotched rivets, so smooth rivets on an early bag are not a red flag by themselves.
The twisted edges of the strap buckles should be polished flat and chamfered, never sharp, and the metal piece at the end of the shoulder strap should have a rounded shape with no abrupt angles.
The Interior Tag and Serial Number
Read the interior tag for what it is. Some replicas have no number at all, and many copy a real one exactly, so a correct-looking number does not make a bag authentic.
On current bags the number is embossed on the leather in four parts: the style number, the color number, a single season letter and a production line number. The authentic tag in the left picture reads 432835 6260 B 535269, and the letter B is Spring/Summer 2017. Many older City bags carry a metal plate instead, with the letter after the first block of digits.
The letters repeat. The fake on the right shows a Z, which on an embossed tag reads as Spring/Summer 2018 and on a metal plate as Fall/Winter 2005. The chart below stops at 2017, and our checker covers the later letters up to 2025.
Notice the differences in how the letters and numbers are written. The replica characters are thicker and less even, while the authentic ones are crisp, narrow and evenly stamped. Judge the shape of the characters rather than their color.
Under the number the tag gives the origin. On City tags it reads made in Italy, in lowercase on older bags and in capitals on later ones.
If a style number appears on both faces of the label, the two should match. On metal plates the digits are engraved with a double line, while fakes of that era tend to use a single line throughout. Some bags also come with a small card printed CONTROLLATO and the digits 0 to 9. The digits on a current tag should look much like the ones on that card.

City vs Le City
Balenciaga relaunched the City in April 2024 as Le City, in lambskin with silver studs and braided handles, in a small (30 by 20 cm) and a medium (37 by 23 cm). For Spring/Summer 2026 Pierpaolo Piccioli reworked it in suede and calfskin, brought back the removable leather-framed mirror and added a Le City First in vegetal-tanned leather.
The photos in this guide show earlier City bags. Run the same checks on a Le City, but do not date it from the tag letter alone. We have not yet confirmed how the letter charts apply to Le City tags.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can you tell if a Balenciaga City bag is real?
Check the shape, stitching, leather, inside pocket, zipper pulls, handle rivets and interior tag, in that order. An authentic City is soft and matte, with fine stitching, U-shaped rivet notches and crisp tag lettering, and it passes every check, not just one.
Does the Balenciaga City bag have a serial number?
Yes. The interior tag carries a style number, a color number, a season letter and a production line number, on a metal plate on older bags. It dates the bag but does not prove it is genuine, because counterfeiters copy real numbers.
Can you check a Balenciaga authenticity code online?
Balenciaga does not publish a key to its tag letters. Our free Balenciaga serial number checker reads the season letter, which dates the bag but does not authenticate it. The sign-in page at auth.balenciaga.com lets owners unlock a digital experience attached to an item they bought. It does not check a bag.
What zipper does a real Balenciaga City bag use?
City bags mostly use Lampo zippers. On older bags the back of the pull reads Lampo, and later pulls carry a capital B or a double B instead. Some fakes use real Lampo zippers, so check that the marking fits the bag's season rather than the brand name alone.
Is the Balenciaga City bag real leather?
Yes. City bags are made in leather, classically a soft, distressed lambskin or goatskin, and the 2026 Le City adds suede and calfskin. A stiff, shiny or plastic-feeling surface is a warning sign.
What is the difference between the City and the Le City?
Le City is the name Balenciaga gave the City when it relaunched it in April 2024, keeping the studs, braided handles and laced zipper pulls. The 2026 version adds suede and calfskin and brings back the leather-framed mirror.
How do I authenticate a Balenciaga City bag online?
Send clear photos of the front, corners, handles, both sides of a zipper pull, the inside pocket and the interior tag. Our authenticators return a verdict in under 30 minutes.
