How to Authenticate a YSL Bag: The Short Answer

Check a Saint Laurent bag in this order:

  1. Logo and heat stamp. The interior stamp should read SAINT LAURENT with a smaller PARIS underneath, then the country of manufacture (MADE IN ITALY on the bags shown here), all in the brand’s own letterforms.
  2. Serial tag. On a current bag it reads three letters, six digits and four more digits, and the last four are the month and year of production.
  3. Hardware. Engraving on the YSL plaque, the chain and the zipper pulls should be sharp, with flat, clean grooves.
  4. Stitching and leather. Even stitches, neat edges and leather that matches the model.
  5. Dust bag and cards. Useful supporting evidence, never proof on their own.

Do YSL bags come with an authenticity card? Yes, a new YSL bag comes with a set of cards, but none of them proves the bag is real. The black SAINT LAURENT PARIS card that resellers call the authenticity card, and the small CONTRÔLE card beside it, carry no number tied to your bag, and counterfeiters copy both. Treat them as supporting evidence at best, and see the cards section for what they look like.

Checking the Material Quality: Leather, Suede, and Craftsmanship

comparison of real and fake YSL materials

Saint Laurent uses different leathers across its lines, so judge the material against the model rather than against a general idea of “good leather”. The Loulou is quilted leather, the Kate and Sunset are often croc-embossed shiny leather, the Puffer and Becky are quilted lambskin, the Sac de Jour is grained leather and the Le 5 à 7 is smooth leather.

If the bag feels rough and plasticky, you might have a counterfeit version of the bag. Also, the texture of the leather might be inconsistent, which is another sign that the bag is fake.

Authenticating the YSL Logo and Stamping

comparison of real and fake YSL logo stamps

Two logos appear on a Saint Laurent bag. The interlocking YSL monogram on the flap or clasp is the Cassandre monogram, drawn for the house by the graphic designer Cassandre in 1961. The SAINT LAURENT PARIS wordmark on the interior stamp arrived with the 2012 rebrand, when the house dropped “Yves” from the ready-to-wear name and kept the YSL monogram for accessories.

The monogram should always be polished and precise. The left arm of the "Y" should be slightly thicker and sit under the "S," while the right arm sits on top of it.

The "S" swoops behind the bottom half of the "Y," then crosses over the "L" and tucks behind it, and its stroke changes weight through the middle. The upright of the "L" starts wider at the top and narrows as it meets the foot.

Some authentic bags have four small mock nails in the corners: two at the tops of the "Y," one at the bottom left of the "S," and one at the bottom right of the "L." Where they are present they should look round and full. However, these nails are not a foolproof indicator of authenticity, as not all genuine bags feature them.

On the SAINT LAURENT PARIS stamp, look at three things. The N and T of LAURENT are joined when the wordmark runs in a straight line, the R has a slightly raised leg, and PARIS is set much smaller, in square letters with small serifs. The authenticator handbook we work from singles out the PARIS line and the MADE IN ITALY stamp beneath it as the places counterfeits most often get the letter shapes wrong.

Counterfeit bags often have visible flaws in the logo. Look for uneven lettering, incorrect fonts, or misalignment. The logo may appear blurry or have inconsistent spacing between letters, which are signs of poor manufacturing quality.

Examining the Inside Label: Key Brand Identifiers

real vs fake Saint Laurent interior leather patch stamped SAINT LAURENT PARIS MADE IN ITALY

The inside label of a genuine YSL bag is a key detail to check. On current bags it is a leather patch heat stamped SAINT LAURENT, then PARIS, then MADE IN ITALY in small capitals.

The serial number sits on a separate small leather tag, usually sewn into the lining near the top zip and cut from the same leather as the bag, so it is easy to miss on a dark interior. On a current bag it reads three letters, a six digit style number and a four digit date group, for example MAL657228 0721. The six digits are the model’s style number, shared by every bag of that style. Older Yves Saint Laurent bags made before the 2012 rebrand use a different tag of twelve digits in two groups of six.

The last four digits of the serial are the production month and year. Our free YSL serial number checker reads them in order and returns the date.

Fake bags often have poorly made labels. Look out for errors in the font, misaligned printing, or shallow embossing. Some counterfeit bags might not have a label at all, or it may be poorly placed. If the label is missing, doesn’t match the standard format, or the serial tag does not follow the format above, look much closer before you buy.

Verifying the Serial Number: Format and Placement

comparison of real and fake YSL serial numbers

Read the last four digits of a current serial straight through: the first two are the month and the last two the year, so a tag ending 0419 was made in April 2019. This date reading applies to the Saint Laurent Paris tag used since the 2012 rebrand. The older twelve digit tag has no date group in it.

A serial that decodes cleanly does not prove the bag is real. Counterfeiters copy real serials and real formats, and the authenticator handbook we use prints a counterfeit tag ending 0518, a perfectly valid May 2018, right next to the genuine examples. What separates them is the shape and depth of the digits. On current bags the digits are tall and each one is struck separately, so they do not sit on a perfectly straight line. A row of digits that looks printed or sunk in as one block is a warning sign.

In contrast, fake YSL bags often have incorrect, missing, or poorly printed serial numbers. Some counterfeits have a serial whose last four digits cannot be a month and year at all, or a number that is smudged and hard to read.

Inspecting Stitching for Consistency and Precision

comparison of real and fake YSL stitching

The quality of stitching is a crucial sign of genuine YSL craftsmanship. Real YSL bags have precise, even stitching with no loose threads or uneven lines. The stitches should be uniform in color and spacing, showing the high level of workmanship.

Many YSL bags are matelassé, which simply means quilted. On the Loulou the quilting forms Y shaped lines, and the College, Puffer and Becky are quilted too. Every quilting line is a row of stitches, so the same rule applies: straight rows, even spacing and no wandering lines. Some YSL bags have no edge stitching and are finished at the edges instead, so a missing edge stitch is not a fault on its own.

Fake YSL bags often have stitching issues. You might notice uneven stitching, loose threads, or mismatched colors. If the stitching looks sloppy or threads can be easily pulled, it’s a strong sign the bag isn’t real.

Analyzing the Hardware: Zippers, Clasps, and Engraving

comparison of real and fake YSL hardware

The hardware on a YSL bag, including zippers, clasps, and decorative elements, is key to spotting a fake. Authentic YSL bags feature solid metal hardware with an even finish, and the edges of the YSL plaque are polished round. Engraving should be clean and engraved into the metal, not painted on, with flat groove floors and crisp outlines.

Saint Laurent mostly uses Lampo zippers. On current bags the back of the zipper pull is engraved SAINT LAURENT PARIS in small, dense letters that should still be legible. Some genuine Niki bags pair a Lampo pull with YKK teeth, which is normal.

On round or curved hardware the N and T of LAURENT are not joined, because the letters follow the curve. Only straight-line engraving joins them.

For YSL bags with chain straps, check the metal plate on the chain. On the Kate it reads SAINT LAURENT on the front and is fixed on the back with one or two hollow hex screws. A cross-head screw there is a counterfeit sign. Metal strap clasps are often engraved on both sides, and the smaller the lettering, the more often a counterfeit blurs it, so look hardest at PARIS. Leather straps should have neatly stitched edges, and any lettering stamped on them should match the interior stamp. Any flaws or inconsistencies in these details could indicate a counterfeit bag.

Assessing the Dust Bag and Packaging: Quality and Branding Details

comparison of real and fake YSL dust bags

A genuine Saint Laurent dust bag is usually black, with SAINT LAURENT printed in white on the front in the brand’s own letterforms. Where PARIS appears under it, PARIS is set much smaller than SAINT LAURENT. The care label inside repeats the logo, and one digit in its short printed row of numbers shows a small break in the stroke, the same detail as on the CONTRÔLE card.

Counterfeit bags often come with dust bags that feel cheap or have inconsistent printing. For instance, if "SAINT LAURENT" and "PARIS" are the same size, or if the dust bag feels rough and low-quality, it’s likely a fake. A dust bag can also come from a different bag, so even a genuine one tells you nothing about the bag inside it. Always compare the dust bag and packaging with images of authentic YSL products to spot any differences.

YSL Authenticity Cards: What They Are and What They Prove

real vs fake Saint Laurent cards: black SAINT LAURENT PARIS card, CONTRÔLE card and white style card

YSL bags do come with cards, but no card in the box is a verdict on the bag. What buyers call the YSL authenticity card is one of the paper inserts packed with a new bag. In the photo above they are a black card printed SAINT LAURENT PARIS, which resellers call the authenticity card, a smaller black card printed CONTRÔLE with the digits 1 to 0, which they call the control card, and a white card listing the style name, the style number and the materials. The two black cards carry no number tied to the individual bag.

The white card is the one worth matching. It prints the style number and a material and color code, 487216 DV726 1000 on the genuine Loulou card above. On a current bag those six digits should match the middle six digits of the serial tag. A mismatch is a reason to look closer. A match proves nothing, because counterfeit cards print style numbers too, as the fake card above does.

The cards are still worth reading, because counterfeit sets often get the printing wrong. On a genuine CONTRÔLE card the logo follows the brand’s letterforms, including the R with a raised leg, and one or two of the printed digits show a small break in the stroke. Which digit it is varies from card to card. The handbooks and course we train on show it on the 2, the 6 and the 0. The counterfeit cards it shows have a plain R and unbroken digits.

A missing card does not make a bag fake. Pre-owned bags lose their paperwork all the time, and genuine cards can be moved to a counterfeit bag. Judge the bag first, then use the cards as supporting evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do YSL bags come with an authenticity card?

Yes, but not with a certificate you can verify. New bags come with paper inserts: a black SAINT LAURENT PARIS card, a small CONTRÔLE card printed with the digits 1 to 0, a white card with the style and materials, and a care booklet. These cards can be copied, so they support an authentication but never replace one.

How can I check if my YSL bag is real?

Check the SAINT LAURENT PARIS heat stamp, then the serial tag, then the hardware engraving, then the stitching and leather, against photos of a genuine bag of the same model. If anything looks off, send clear photos to an authenticator before you pay.

Can I check a YSL serial number online?

Yes. Our free YSL serial number checker reads the last four digits and returns the month and year of production. A date only tells you when a bag was made, not whether it is real, because counterfeiters copy valid serials.

Where is the serial number on a YSL bag?

On a small leather tag sewn into the lining, usually near the top zip, often in the same color as the interior. Current tags read three letters, six digits and four more digits.

Does a YSL dust bag prove the bag is real?

No. A dust bag can come from a different bag, and counterfeit bags often come with convincing ones. Treat it as a minor detail next to the stamp, serial and hardware.

What Should I Do If I Suspect My YSL Bag Is Fake?

Start by examining the bag using the guide above. If you still have doubts, send photos to LegitGrails for an expert review of your purchase. Every order comes with a certificate.

Where Can I Get My YSL Bag Authenticated?

You can get a Saint Laurent bag authenticated online from clear photos of the logo, the heat stamp, the serial tag and the hardware. Our Saint Laurent authentication gives you a result in under 30 minutes.

Does the Price of a YSL Bag Indicate Its Authenticity?

No, the price alone can’t be an indicator of an authentic YSL bag. A price far below the market is a warning sign, but counterfeits are also sold at full price. Check the bag itself.

How to Tell if a YSL Bag Is Real: Final Checklist to Avoid Fakes

So here you have it, a complete guide on how to identify a fake YSL bag. Key things to avoid in fake YSL bags:

  • A heat stamp with the wrong letter shapes, especially in PARIS and MADE IN ITALY.
  • A serial tag that breaks the format or whose last four digits are not a real month and year.
  • Blurry, misaligned, or incorrectly spaced logo stamping.
  • Shallow or rough engraving on the hardware, the zipper pulls and the chain plate.
  • Messy, uneven stitching or loose threads.
  • Cheap or plasticky leather that does not match the model.
  • Dust bags and packaging that feel cheap or have incorrect fonts.
  • Cards with typos or printing errors, remembering that a perfect card proves nothing on its own.
