Fake vs Real Dior Toujours: How to Tell If Yours Is Real

To tell if a Dior Toujours is real, look past the silhouette and the D-I-O-R charms and read the small details. On the pairs in this guide, the counterfeit Macrocannage thread runs as a hairy, continuous cord, its CD plate holds the stud and screw in wide sunken circles, its CD engravings are thick and rounded, and its serial characters show almost no depth in the photo.

The photo above pairs a tan authentic Toujours with a black counterfeit. Both are the same tote model, and tan versus black is a color choice, not a tell. At this size the two bags look close, which is why the checks below are all close-ups. Dior introduced the Toujours at its Spring-Summer 2023 show under Maria Grazia Chiuri and released it in July 2023 in small, medium and large sizes, later adding vertical nano, small and medium totes, in Macrocannage calfskin and also in Dior Oblique jacquard. Dior lists a double closure, a thin lace-through strap plus a Christian Dior Paris strap with a CD Lock clasp whose D twists to adjust the sides, and describes the bag as made in Italy. Prices vary by size, material and region, so check Dior's store for the current figure.

How the Toujours Differs From Other Dior Totes

Why the Dior Toujours Is Heavily Counterfeited

The Toujours arrived in 2023 as a new everyday tote, and its recognizable parts, quilted diamonds, gold letter charms and a gold stamp inside, are easy to copy well enough for a listing photo.

Handbags top the seizure counts. In fiscal year 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized 5,132,402 counterfeit handbags and wallets, the most of any product category by quantity, with a retail value of $1.09 billion, third by value. The International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition works with brands against the same trade.

Several cards below pair bags in different colors. Color, size and metal tone are never tells in this guide, and a correctly formatted serial number clears nothing, because the counterfeit in the serial tab section carries one. What I compare is how thread, stamps and engravings are made: stroke weight, letter shapes, depth, edges and stitching. Shine and finish are not tells either, because the photos are lit differently.

Macrocannage Topstitching and Leather Grain

The authentic Macrocannage stitching reads as a row of separate short stitches, each one a neat twist, with a small gap where the thread sinks into the leather. The counterfeit uses the same diamond layout, but its stitches run together into one hairy cord, and loose fibers break out of it.

• Loose fibers. In the counterfeit crops single fibers stick out of the seam and lie across the leather. The authentic crops show none along the same kind of seam.
• Stitch definition. On the authentic panel you can count each stitch along a diamond edge. On the counterfeit the stitches merge into a continuous twisted line, so they are hard to count.
• What does not help. The counterfeit leather has a crinkled, glossy surface, but Dior also sells the Toujours in Macrocannage crinkled calfskin, so grain texture is a variant question, not a tell. How puffy the quilted panels look also varies with leather and stuffing.

Zoom on a point where two stitch lines cross. Loose fibers and merged stitches show there first.

CD Plate, Stud and Screw on the Strap Tab

Both tabs carry the same shield-shaped gold plate with a stud, a small CD and a screw. On the authentic plate the stud and the screw each sit on a narrow collar, and a stepped border follows the outline of the shield. On this counterfeit each one sits inside a wide sunken circle, and the plate edge is plain.

• Around the stud. The authentic collar is a thin ring just wider than the stud. The counterfeit recess is a broad dark circle, much wider than the stud itself.
• Around the screw. The authentic screw head sits in a small ring. The counterfeit screw sits in a large sunken disc that reaches almost across the narrow end of the plate.
• Plate edge. The authentic plate shows a second line running inside its outline, where the edge steps down. The counterfeit plate is a flat blank with a single cut edge.

Shoot the plate at a slight angle. A sunken circle around the stud shows as a dark crescent that a straight-on photo can hide.

CD Engraving on the Leather Zipper Pull

The authentic zipper pull ends in a square gold cap with a CD drawn as a thin, low outline. The counterfeit cap carries a bolder CD made of thick, rounded tubes, each with a groove down its middle, standing up from the metal.

• Line weight. On the authentic cap each letter is a fine outline of even width. On the counterfeit each stroke is a fat tube, several times heavier.
• Relief. The authentic letters sit low on the cap. The counterfeit letters rise high enough to throw their own highlights and shadows.
• What does not help. The authentic cap still wears its clear protective film, which only means the item was unused. Scratches on the counterfeit cap could come from wear, so they are not a tell either.

Hold the pull flat and photograph the cap from directly above. An angled shot stretches the letters and makes line weight hard to judge.

CD Engraving on the Zipper Stop

At the end of the authentic zipper, the rectangular stop carries a CD drawn in thin, even lines, and the stop itself is a crisp rectangle. The counterfeit stop carries a CD with heavy strokes that fill more of the face, framed by a rounded rim.

• CD line weight. The authentic C and D are fine lines, and where they meet in the middle they form a narrow double line. On the counterfeit every stroke is thick, and the C closes up the space inside it.
• Share of the stop. The authentic CD leaves a wide margin of plain metal around it. The counterfeit CD reaches much closer to the edges.
• Stop edges. The authentic stop has straight sides and sharp corners. The counterfeit stop has a raised, rounded rim running around its face.

Use your phone's macro mode on the stop so the engraving fills the frame. Ignore the teeth, since counterfeiters can buy ready-made zipper chain.

Serial Number Tab Inside the Bag

Both tabs carry a code in the same format, 09-MA-0263 on the authentic bag and 09-MA-0243 on the counterfeit. The format proves nothing. What separates them in these photos is depth. The authentic characters are pressed into the leather with gold inside the groove, and the counterfeit characters look printed on top.

Dior has never published how its codes work, but authenticators and resellers read the last four digits as interleaved: the first and third give the month, the second and fourth the year. The authentic 0263 reads June 2023, a month before the Toujours reached stores. The counterfeit 0243 reads April 2023, just as plausible, which is why a decoded date clears nothing.

• Depth. In the authentic crops each digit has a visible wall and shadow where it is pressed in. The counterfeit digits show no wall or shadow and sit flat on the grain.
• Edges. The authentic characters have clean edges where the die cut into the leather. The counterfeit photo is low resolution, so judge it on depth, not on how sharp its edges look.
• What does not help. Spacing, character size and the exact shape of the M and A vary on genuine Dior codes made at the MA factory, so do not judge a code by its gaps or letter widths.

Light the tab from one side with a desk lamp or a window. A pressed impression throws small shadows inside each digit, and a flat print throws none.

Red Flags That End the Inspection

Hairy Macrocannage thread with fibers breaking out along the seams is the finding I would look at first on a Toujours. Quilting covers the whole bag, so the evidence is everywhere, and fibers breaking out of a bag that otherwise looks unused are hard to explain. Confirm it with a second checkpoint before deciding.

• Hairy thread and stitches that merge into one cord. The authentic Macrocannage stitching here is a row of separate, tight stitches.
• A code that looks printed on the surface. Dior codes are pressed into the leather, and the authentic characters here have visible depth.
• A stud or screw sitting in a wide sunken circle on the CD plate. The authentic plate here holds both on narrow collars.
• A thick, heavy CD on the zipper stop or pull. The authentic engravings here are fine lines.
• A zipper slider with a shallow, blurry engraving on its back. Dior sliders are commonly engraved with the Christian Dior name on the back, in full, rounded letters rather than flat ones.

One thing that is not a red flag on its own: gold foil spreading slightly past the letters of an interior heat stamp. A Chinese authenticator handbook we use notes that foil overflow and letters touching are common on genuine Dior hot stamps and should be tolerated. Some reseller guides call any overflow a sign of a fake, so do not mark a stamp down for that alone.

What Current Superfakes Get Right

The counterfeit Toujours in the hero photo is not crude. It has the tote shape, the lace-through strap, the D-I-O-R charms and Macrocannage quilting, and the close-ups show CD hardware and a correctly formatted serial tab. A checklist that only asks whether these parts exist will pass it. What You Can Check Yourself and What You Cannot

Three checkpoints transfer well through a written guide: the quilting thread, the depth of the serial characters and the weight of the CD engravings. Heat stamp lettering is harder, because genuine Dior foil spreads and genuine codes vary in spacing, and shine or metal tone never count, because lighting and camera processing change how they look.
