The Louis Vuitton Coussin is a slouchy accordion bag in Monogram-embossed puffy lambskin, carried on a chunky LV chain with a removable textile strap. Nicolas Ghesquière showed it in his Spring-Summer 2021 collection in October 2020, and it was pre-launched in select stores on February 19, 2021. It launched at $3,550 in the US, and Coussin PM listings on Louis Vuitton's US site reached $5,100 in 2026. The two bags above are different colors, which is not a tell. Both look puffy at this distance, and only the close-ups reveal the counterfeit's hard carved edges. How the Coussin Differs From Other Louis Vuitton Chain Bags

The Coussin shares a removable textile strap with the Multi Pochette Accessoires and a crossbody role with the Pochette Metis, but only the Coussin pairs puffy embossed lambskin with a chunky engraved chain. Why the Louis Vuitton Coussin Is Heavily Counterfeited

The Coussin arrived in 2021 as an instantly recognizable silhouette and has stayed in the line in new colors and materials. A four-figure price, steady resale demand and a shape anyone can name are exactly what counterfeit workshops look for.

In fiscal year 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized more handbags and wallets than any other product type, 5,132,402 items. The 2025 OECD and EUIPO report on global trade in fakes found that clothing, footwear and leather goods together made up 62% of seized counterfeit goods.

Timing adds a trap. Louis Vuitton began replacing heat-stamped date codes with embedded microchips in March 2021, weeks after the Coussin pre-launched, and phased the codes out over the months that followed. So most authentic Coussins carry no date code, and a missing code is not a red flag. Counterfeits are often stamped with one anyway, and a code that cannot exist is a different matter.

Interior Patch Heat Stamp: Letter Shapes

On this pair, the authentic Coussin patch uses broad capitals with an O as wide as it is tall. Scaled to the same letter height, the counterfeit capitals are narrower, its O is an upright oval and its N is pinched.

• Letter proportions. On the authentic stamp the O in LOUIS is close to a circle and the N is about as wide as the O. The counterfeit O is an upright oval and the N is narrower.
• The country line is not a tell. The Coussin is made in more than one country, and an authentic stamp later in this guide reads made in France. Compare the shapes of shared letters, not the length of the made in line.

Shoot the patch straight on so the stamp fills the frame, then resize your photo until its letter height matches a reference stamp before you compare a single shape. Proportions only mean anything at matched scale.

Puffy Lambskin and Embossed Monogram

The decisive Coussin tell is depth. Authentic puffy lambskin rises into soft domes between the Monogram motifs, with creases running from each petal tip. The counterfeit here is a flat panel with outlined motifs stamped into it and no cushioning at all.

• Cushioning. On the authentic panel, the leather between motifs bulges up and catches light in rounded highlights. The counterfeit surface stays level from one motif to the next.
• Creasing at the petal tips. The authentic leather folds into short creases where it pulls toward each flower tip. The counterfeit shows no pull lines.
• Motif edges. The authentic motifs slope softly into the surrounding leather. The counterfeit motifs stand on a flat field with a crisp outline, like a stamp impression.

Photograph the front panel with light from one side. Raking light turns authentic cushioning into highlights and shadows, and a flat panel has nothing to cast. Lighting also changes how deep embossing looks, so judge the cushioned profile, not depth alone.

Interior Stamped Code

The authentic Coussin tab reads MI0251, which in Louis Vuitton's week and year pattern points to the first week of February 2021, just before the bag reached stores. The counterfeit MM3275 would decode to 2025, years after chips replaced codes.

• Reading the pattern. On codes of this format, the first and third digits give the week and the second and fourth give the year. The authentic 0251 gives week 05 of 2021, about two weeks before the February 19 pre-launch. The counterfeit 3275 gives week 37 of 2025.
• Why 2025 cannot be right. Louis Vuitton began replacing heat-stamped date codes with embedded chips in March 2021 and phased them out that year. A Coussin made in 2025 should have no date code, so a stamp claiming that year contradicts itself.
• The window works both ways. The Coussin was first shown in October 2020, so a code dated years earlier cannot belong to one either.
• The type is not the test. Code fonts vary between factories and years, and this authentic MI0251 is narrower than many genuine codes. Judge the date, not the characters.

Most authentic Coussins have no code at all, so do not go hunting for one. If a code is present, decode it and ask whether that date could exist on this model.

Lining Heat Stamp: Stroke Weight and Circled R

On this pair, the authentic Coussin interior stamp uses heavier, wider letters than the counterfeit when both are scaled to the same letter height. The counterfeit letters are thinner and narrower, and its registered mark leaves more open space around the R.

• Stroke weight. At the same letter height, the authentic strokes are noticeably thicker, especially in made in France. The counterfeit strokes are lighter.
• Letter width. The authentic O in VUITTON is about as wide as it is tall. The counterfeit O is an upright oval, as on the counterfeit patch stamp above.
• Registered mark. The authentic circled R has a bold R that nearly fills its ring. The counterfeit R is thinner, leaving more open space inside.
• Set the leather aside. The two stamps sit on different leathers, so grain and foil tone are not used here.

Photograph the lining stamp square to the leather in soft, even light, and get close enough that the circled R is sharp. An angled or blurred shot stretches the letters and can invent an oval O that the stamp does not have.

Red Flags That End the Inspection

A flat Coussin panel ends the inspection on its own. The bag is defined by puffy lambskin that swells between the Monogram motifs, and a panel with the pattern merely stamped into it cannot be the authentic material. Hard carved outlines around the motifs point the same way.

• No cushioning under side light. Leather between motifs that throws no shadow is the wrong material.
• A date code dated years after 2021. Louis Vuitton phased codes out in favor of embedded chips during 2021, so a stamp decoding to 2025 contradicts itself.
• A date code dated years before 2020. The Coussin was first shown in October 2020, so an older date cannot belong to one.

What Current Superfakes Get Right

The counterfeits in these cards are not crude. The Monogram layout is in the right order, the heat stamps spell every line correctly and the counterfeit code tab uses the familiar two letters and four digits.
