To tell if Celine sunglasses are real, start with the printed line inside the temple. Every size figure should match the published specification for that model code, and the groups should sit apart with clear gaps, including a space before the final letter. Then look at the center of the Triomphe logo on the outer temple. On the authentic pair in this guide its lower element narrows to a point at the waist rather than ending in a rounded arch.

The pair in the photo above is the Celine Triomphe Metal 01, a gold oval frame with green lenses sold by Celine as reference 4S235CMLB.35SG and printed on the temple as CL40235U. From the front the counterfeit is close enough to pass in a listing photo, so knowing how to spot fake Celine sunglasses means reading the markings and the tooled details instead. Celine eyewear is produced by Thélios, the eyewear company of the LVMH group, which took over Celine after the previous licensee Safilo closed its Celine agreement at the end of 2017. Thélios makes frames in Longarone in northern Italy.

Our reference set also held lens rim, nose pad, hinge and case photos, plus a pair of black acetate temples. We compared each at equal scale and left them out. The differences came from lighting, camera angle, surface finish or a different frame model.

Why Celine Sunglasses Are Heavily Counterfeited

A small gold oval with the Triomphe logo on the temple reads instantly in a street style picture, and that recognition is exactly what a counterfeiter sells. Copying a thin metal oval is cheap. A fake vs real Celine sunglasses check comes down to the temple print and the Triomphe logo, not the silhouette.

Price does the rest. US retailer listings for this pair sit around $600, enough to make a discounted listing tempting and little enough that many buyers skip a proper check. In the U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizure statistics for fiscal year 2024, sunglasses ranked fourth among seized counterfeit goods both by quantity, at 771,533 items, and by retail value, at about $414 million.

Inner Temple Engraving: Model Code and Sizes

Both temples on the Celine Triomphe Metal 01 pair in this guide read CL40235U 30N, so neither the model code nor the color code is the tell. The authentic line ends 54, square, 18, 135, *3 H. The counterfeit line prints 145 as the temple length, packs its groups closer together and runs *3H into one block.

• Temple length. Retailers list every color of the CL40235U at 54, 18 and 135, which is exactly what the authentic temple prints. On the counterfeit the last two digits sit under glare, but with the contrast lifted they read 45, so the figure is 145. A temple length that disagrees with the listing for the same code is a strong signal. Check the full code, including its final letter, because other Celine codes, such as Asian fit versions ending in F, carry different sizes on genuine frames.
• Gaps between groups. Measured in digit steps, the distance from the start of one digit to the start of the next on the same line, the gap from CL40235U to 30N is about 3.2 steps on the authentic temple and about 2.3 on the counterfeit. The gap from 30N to 54 is about 2.7 against 1.9. Because it is a ratio, it holds even though the two photos were taken at different distances.
• The final group. On the authentic temple the H starts almost two digit steps after the 3. On the counterfeit it follows at a normal letter step, so *3H reads as one word. The 3 appears to be the lens filter category, which sunglasses sold in Europe must be labeled with and which retailers list as 3 for this pair.
• Digit proportions. Scaled to the same digit height in the zoomed crops, the counterfeit 0 and N are narrower, while its 5 is wider. The authentic 0 is about 0.69 times as wide as it is tall, the counterfeit 0 about 0.60.

Two things on this card do not separate the pairs. The square between 54 and 18 is the same size relative to the digits on both temples, about 0.8 of digit height. The counterfeit strokes measure about a fifth thicker at equal height, and that photo was shot against a dark reflection that makes bright print look heavier, so do not judge the line by how bold it looks.

Photograph the inner temple with light raking across it so the print does not flare, then write each group down in order and compare it with a listing for the same model code.

Celine Reference Number and Published Sizes

Celine's own site lists the Triomphe Metal 01 as reference 4S235CMLB.35SG, with a lens width of 5.4 cm, a bridge of 1.8 cm and a temple length of 13.5 cm. Those are the same 54, 18 and 135 printed on the authentic temple as CL40235U. Looking up the Celine reference gives you size figures from the brand itself, not only from a retailer.

• Match the model digits. On the four Triomphe listings we compared on celine.com, the three digits after 4S matched the digits after CL40 in the temple code retailers sell: 4S235 and CL40235U, 4S194 and CL40194U, 4S216 and CL40216U, 4S253 and CL40253I.
• Convert the sizes. Celine publishes centimeters, so 5.4, 1.8 and 13.5 read as 54, 18 and 135. The acetate Triomphe 01 (4S194) is listed at 5.2, 2.2 and 14.5 cm, so a longer temple is normal on that model.
• Do not match the color part. The code after the dot follows a different system. This gold and green pair is .35SG on celine.com and 30N on the temple, and that difference is expected.
• When retailers disagree, use Celine's figure. Two retailers list the CL40194U temple as 140 and 145. Celine's 14.5 cm settles it.

Triomphe Logo on the Temple

On the authentic Triomphe Metal 01 the center of the temple logo is an hourglass of two outlined triangles that meet in a narrow point. On this counterfeit the lower element has a broad, rounded top, and a flat horizontal bar crosses the waist where the authentic shapes simply meet.

• Lower element. In the left-hand crops the authentic lower triangle rises to a sharp apex, with a tall, narrow inner outline following it. The counterfeit lower element is shaped like an arch with round shoulders, and its inner outline is rounded too.
• The waist. The authentic upper and lower triangles touch at a single narrow point. The counterfeit places a flat bar between them, which you can see in both the full photo and the crop.
• Upper element. The authentic upper shape is an outlined inverted triangle. In the counterfeit photo it reads as a narrow slit. That photo is softer, so treat this one as supporting.

The grooves along each C are not a tell on this pair. Both logos show the double line, and the counterfeit only looks puffier because its photo is brighter and less sharp. Shine and polish on the relief say nothing about authenticity either.

Shoot the temple square from the side and zoom into the center of the logo. Compare the shapes, where the lower element ends and whether anything crosses the waist, rather than how shiny the metal looks.

MADE IN ITALY and CE Markings

Thélios makes Celine eyewear at its Longarone manufacturing site in Italy, and retailers list the CL40235U as made in Italy. Look for MADE IN ITALY and a CE mark on the inside of the temples. Another country printed on this model conflicts with those listings. A correct marking proves nothing on its own, because a counterfeiter can print the same words.

• Where to look. TheRealReal's guide to Phoebe Philo-era Céline frames places CÉLINE MADE IN ITALY inside the right arm and the style numbers inside the left. We found no brand source for the layout on current frames, so photograph both arms.
• The CE mark. Sunglasses sold in the EU fall under the EU regulation on personal protective equipment, which says the CE marking goes on the product itself, or on the packaging and documents where that is not possible. A frame without it is not a verdict by itself.

Photograph both inner temples along their full length, because the made-in line and the model line can sit on different arms.

Case, Cloth and Barcode

Retailers selling the new CL40235U 30N list an original Celine case and a cleaning cloth with it, and several warn that the case supplied can differ from the one pictured. So check that a case and cloth are there, not which design they are. If a box label or receipt shows a barcode, retailers list 192337107863 for this model, color and size.

• Case design varies. Amevista, Pretavoir and Visiofactory all note that the case can differ from the photo or change by collection. A case that looks different from a store image is not a warning sign.
• Barcode. Sunglass Hut, OPSM and Amevista all list 192337107863 for the gold and green CL40235U in size 54, and Amevista names it as color 30N. Other colors and sizes carry their own numbers, so compare against the listing for the exact code.
• What proves nothing. Genuine Celine cases are sold on their own on resale sites, and a barcode can be copied from a listing. None of the listings we checked mention a certificate of authenticity, so a missing one is not a warning sign either.

Photograph the case, cloth and any box label flat and square, with the barcode digits sharp enough to read.

Red Flags That End the Inspection

A printed temple length that contradicts the published size for the same Celine model code is the strongest warning in this guide. Confirm it with a sharp photo and a listing for that exact code, including its final letter, before you treat it as a verdict.

• Size figures that disagree with the model code. Look up the code, then check lens, bridge and temple length against the listing for that exact reference.
• Groups crowded together. On the authentic pair the gaps between groups are wide compared with the spacing of the digits, and the final letter stands apart. A line where the last group runs into one block deserves a closer look.
• A rounded arch or a flat bar in the Triomphe center. On the authentic pair the center element is two triangles meeting at a point.
• A country other than Italy inside the temple of a CL40235U. Retailers list this model as made in Italy, so another country is a reason to compare the rest of the print closely, not a verdict on its own.

What is not a red flag: a gold tone that looks warmer or paler than a store photo, a shinier or softer logo, a different lens tint, a case that looks different, or no CE mark on the frame itself. Lighting and camera settings change all of these, and genuine cases vary between seasons.

What Current Superfakes Get Right

Judged as Celine sunglasses replica vs original, the counterfeit in this guide is not a crude copy. The oval shape, endpiece blocks, bridge and lenses all match from the front, and it copies the correct CL40235U and 30N codes, the 54 and 18 sizes, the grooves along each C and CELINE lettering on the nose pads.

What Celine sunglasses superfakes still get wrong is detail that has to be tooled, not traced. On this pair the counterfeit got one size figure wrong, set its print groups too close together and reshaped the center of the Triomphe logo. Color, finish and a correct code proved nothing.

Spacing and the logo's center shape are comparisons, and they only become reliable once you have seen authentic frames of the same model side by side.

One more limit. Celine makes many sunglasses models in metal and acetate, each with its own code, sizes and markings. A frame that differs from the pair above may simply be another model, so compare it with a listing for its own code. Codes ending in F, such as CL40198F, are Asian fit versions with their own bridge and temple sizes, and older frames are listed with slash-style codes such as CL 41098/F/S.
