• Join between S and Y. On the authentic logo the top curve of the S runs behind the right arm of the Y without a visible break. The counterfeit shows a small dark gap and a bright speck at that meeting point, and a visible step where the S curve starts on the left.
• Surface finish. The authentic clasp in this close-up is a brighter gold than the counterfeit. That is a different bag and different light, and finish and plating are never a tell.

Photograph the clasp straight on in daylight, then zoom into the corner of the L and the point where the S passes behind the Y. Gaps and residue show up there before anything else on the logo looks wrong.

Interior Serial Number Stamp

Saint Laurent debosses a serial line above MADE IN ITALY on a leather tab inside the bag: a letter prefix, a six-digit style number and four date digits. On this pair the authentic characters sit close together, while the counterfeit MAL578000·0419 and its MADE IN ITALY leave a clear gap between every character, so both lines stretch across the tab.

• Spacing. Compare MADE IN ITALY, the one line both tabs share. On the authentic tab the letters almost touch. On the counterfeit each letter stands alone with open space around it. The authentic tab is photographed at an angle, so compare the gaps with the letter widths rather than absolute sizes.
• Both style numbers are real. The authentic tab reads GAB·623931·0520, and retailers list 623931 as a Cassandra top handle. The counterfeit carries 578000, which retailers also list as the medium Cassandra top handle. A correct number is exactly what a good copy carries, so it proves nothing either way.
• The date digits. The last four digits read as month and year. The authentic 0520 is May 2020 and the counterfeit 0419 is April 2019. Both are plausible dates.
• Prefix and dots. Genuine tags use several letter prefixes, MAL among them, and I know of no reliable rule for where the dots fall. I do not treat the prefix or a missing dot as a tell.

The tab is tucked inside, so pull it toward the light and photograph it flat, straight on. Never treat a serial as proof by itself, because counterfeiters copy real numbers from genuine bags.

SAINT LAURENT PARIS Heat Stamp Wording and Layout

Current Saint Laurent bags carry a SAINT LAURENT stamp inside, with PARIS in smaller letters on a line below. Read it as text, not as a texture. On a straight line the N and T of SAINT and LAURENT are joined, and the R of LAURENT kicks its leg slightly outward. The R of PARIS is straighter. Check the spelling, the two lines and those joins.

• What to look for. SAINT LAURENT on one line, PARIS smaller underneath, the NT pairs joined and every letter spelled correctly. A stamp that separates the N and T on a straight line deserves a second look.
• Round hardware is different. When the same words curve around a round snap or magnetic closure, Saint Laurent separates the N and T, so a gap there is correct and not a flaw.
• What does not prove anything. A correct layout is easy to copy, so a stamp that reads right clears nothing on its own. I also do not judge a stamp by how thick or deep its letters look, because leather, foil and camera angle change that.

Photograph the stamp straight on with light coming from one side, so the letter edges throw a small shadow and the joins between N and T can be read.

Style Number Against the Bag's Size

The six digits after the prefix on the serial tab are a style number, and retailers list different numbers for the mini and medium Cassandra. So measure the bag and compare. Retailers list 578000 as the medium top handle, about 24 cm wide, and 602716 and 623930 as the mini, about 20 cm wide. Listings for 623931 disagree: some call it a medium, one gives mini measurements. Retailer listings contain mistakes, so a number that seems to belong to another size is a reason to ask the seller questions, not a verdict.

• What to look for. A tape measure laid along the base in the same photo as the bag, and a tab number that belongs to a Cassandra of that size.
• What does not prove anything. A matching number and size. The counterfeit in this guide carries 578000, a real medium number, so copies can pass this check.
• Where it has limits. These four numbers are the ones I could confirm in retailer listings. Other leathers or seasons may use numbers not listed here, and retailer measurements differ by a centimeter or so, so an unfamiliar number is a question to ask, not a verdict.

Take one photo of the tab and one of the bag's base next to a tape measure, and search the six-digit number together with the word Cassandra to see which size it is listed as.

Dust Bag Print: What Proves Nothing
