A chevron pattern and a gold monogram pass in a thumbnail, and a bag that costs well over $1,000 new leaves plenty of room for a copy sold at a third of that. • Letter edges. The authentic letters are flat on top with a crisp edge where the face meets the side. The counterfeit letters have rounded shoulders, so there is no clean line between face and side.
• Stroke weight. In the bottom crops the authentic A and N are built from slim strokes with open counters. The counterfeit strokes are fatter along their whole length, and the counter inside the A is smaller.
• Corners and joins. The authentic N has sharp inner corners. The counterfeit N and A joins look melted, with no clean point where the diagonals meet.
• The S. The authentic S is an even, closed curve. The counterfeit S is lumpy, with its upper and lower bowls at different weights and a ragged outline.

Turn the cap so the letters face the camera and shoot with light coming from one side. Flat-faced letters throw a hard shadow, and rounded letters blur into the band.

Zipper Slider and Pull Loop

The authentic zipper slider in this photo has a slim, flat bridge and a thin wire pull loop that narrows to a triangle at the bottom. The counterfeit slider has a thicker, rounded bridge and a heavier rod loop bent into a wide U.

• Pull loop shape. The authentic wire loop is narrow where it passes through the slider and spreads into a triangle below it. The counterfeit loop keeps its two legs almost parallel, a broad U all the way down.
• Wire thickness. In the bottom left crops the authentic wire is thin. The counterfeit rod is visibly thicker where it bends around the slider.
• Bridge of the slider. The authentic bridge is a flat strip with a squared edge in the bottom right crop. The counterfeit bridge is rounded and thick, and it bulges where it wraps around the loop.

Open the zip a little and shoot the slider from the side as well as from above. The loop profile and the bridge thickness only show up from the side. Zippers can change between Lou versions, so compare against a retail photo of your exact bag.

Serial Number Tag and Style Number

Both tags follow the same layout, three letters, six digits, a dot and four digits above MADE IN ITALY, so the format proves nothing. The authentic characters are cleanly formed and evenly spaced. On the counterfeit several digits are misshapen, some barely register, and the gaps change along the line.

The code can still be read. The six digits are the style number and the last four give the month and year, so the authentic 0519 reads May 2019. Retail listings give 612579 for the Lou Mini, 612544 for the Lou Camera Bag and 534817 for the Lou Belt Bag. Neither tag in this card is a Mini: the authentic tag reads 534817, a belt bag, and the counterfeit reads as 612544. That is the point of the check. Match the number to the model you are buying.

• Digit shapes. In the authentic crops the 5 and the 0 have closed, clean outlines. The counterfeit 5 is a lopsided blob, the 6 has a filled-in bowl, and the 0 narrows into a teardrop.
• Stamping. Every authentic character reads clearly across the line. On the counterfeit the 6 and the 1 almost disappear while their neighbors are pressed deep.
• Spacing. The authentic characters keep a steady rhythm. The counterfeit gaps change from one character to the next.
• Style number. Style numbers change when a model is reissued. The Lou Camera Bag, for example, is listed under 612544 and later under 761554, so a different number for the same bag is not proof of a fake. A number that belongs to a different bag is worth asking about.

Pull the tag flat and light it low from one side, so weak characters show up. Then search the six digits together with Saint Laurent and check which bag they belong to.

Interior SAINT LAURENT PARIS Heat Stamp

The authentic heat stamp sets a low, wide PARIS under SAINT LAURENT, with a faint blind-stamped country line below. On the counterfeit, PARIS stands noticeably taller against the line above, the S is wider and rounder, and the country line clearly reads MADE IN MADAGASCAR.

• Proportions of PARIS. Measured on this card, the authentic PARIS letters are a little over half the height of the SAINT LAURENT letters. The counterfeit PARIS is close to three quarters of that height, so the word looks narrower and taller.
• Width of the S. In the bottom crops the authentic S is narrow and upright. The counterfeit S is wider for its height and rounder, closer to a circle.
• Gap between the lines. The counterfeit leaves a wider gap between SAINT LAURENT and PARIS than the authentic stamp does.
• Country of origin. The counterfeit stamp says MADE IN MADAGASCAR. Retailers list some Saint Laurent raffia styles, such as the Icare in raffia, as made in Madagascar, but retail listings for the leather Lou Mini give Italy, and the authentic serial tag in the card above says MADE IN ITALY.

Read every word of the stamp and compare it with the serial tag on the same bag. Two parts of one leather bag that name different countries are a mismatch worth sending to an expert.

Red Flags That End the Inspection

Lettering is where I would stop. Rounded, thick letters on the tassel cap, digits that change shape or vanish along the serial tag, a tall PARIS on the heat stamp, and a heat stamp naming a different country from the tag are each enough to send the bag to an expert.

• Rounded, thick letters or a lumpy S on the tassel cap. The authentic engraving is flat-faced and slim.
• Misshapen or vanishing digits on the serial tag. Clean, evenly spaced characters are what the authentic tag shows.
• A style number for a different model. Look the six digits up before you pay.
• A tall, narrow PARIS on the heat stamp. The authentic PARIS sits low and wide.
• A country on the heat stamp that does not match the tag. Read both lines on the same bag.

What Current Superfakes Get Right

The counterfeit in the hero comparison is not a rough copy. The chevron quilting, the piping, the top zip and the monogram placement are close enough to pass in a resale listing. The other counterfeits in these cards also come with a serial tag in the right format, a real Lou style number, a MADE IN ITALY line on that tag, a SAINT LAURENT engraved tassel cap and a gold foil heat stamp, so a checklist that only asks whether these parts exist will pass them. Packaging did not separate them. The dust bags we compared for this guide were both black with white SAINT LAURENT lettering, and the counterfeit added a PARIS line. Collectors report genuine dust bags printed both with and without PARIS over the years, and dust bags are easy to buy on their own, so I left the dust bag out of the checkpoints.

What You Can Check Yourself and What You Cannot

Each shows up in a sharp phone photo without a reference bag beside it. The zipper pull is useful too, but zippers can differ between Lou versions, so it needs a retail photo of the same bag.

I left the front monogram, the leather grain and the quilting stitches out of this guide.
