Which Resale Platforms Authenticate Luxury Items?
Resale platforms check authenticity in three different ways. The RealReal, Fashionphile and Rebag take the item in and authenticate it before it is listed. eBay, Vestiaire Collective, StockX, GOAT, Poshmark and Vinted verify qualifying orders after you pay and before delivery. Mercari and Grailed review photos and listing content, and Depop moderates listings and covers counterfeit items under its buyer protection.
This guide does not rank the platforms. It sets out the method each one publishes: who handles the item, at what point, on which orders, and what happens when an item does not pass. Everything in the tables comes from each platform's own pages, read on October 13, 2026.
| Model | Platforms |
|---|---|
| The platform holds the item | The RealReal, Fashionphile, Rebag |
| The marketplace verifies in the middle | eBay Authenticity Guarantee, Vestiaire Collective, StockX, GOAT, Poshmark, Vinted |
| The marketplace reviews the listing | Mercari, Grailed, Depop |
The platform holds the item. The platform takes the item in and authenticates it before it is listed or sold. Every listing has been through the platform's own check. Read the return and refund terms before you buy.
The marketplace verifies in the middle. On qualifying orders the seller ships to the marketplace, which checks the item after you pay and before it reaches you. The check applies to qualifying listings. Look for the badge, the price threshold and the shipping option before you pay.
The marketplace reviews the listing. Photos and listing content are reviewed, and listings found to be counterfeit are removed. Look for the platform's verified badge and read its buyer protection terms. An independent authentication from photos can add a second opinion.
A platform check and an independent check do different jobs and work well together. The platform's check is part of the sale. An independent authentication is a second opinion you can order yourself, on any platform and in private sales, from photos. LegitGrails has offered this since 2019, and the second half of this guide shows where it fits.
How Each Resale Platform Authenticates: Comparison Table
The twelve platforms below are among the best-known places to buy pre-owned luxury goods and sneakers online. For each one, the table gives the type of check and what it costs the buyer, and the notes under it say how the check works and what the platform says happens when an item is not authentic. Every row names the country pages it was read on, and the notes link to them. Last checked: October 13, 2026.

Sources: Fashionphile authentication page

Sources: Rebag Authenticity
If an item is not authentic. Full refund on return of the bag if it is proven inauthentic by a verified authenticator.
Vestiaire Collective
How it works. With Authenticated Shipping the seller sends the item to a Vestiaire hub for authentication and quality control before it travels to you. With Direct Shipping the seller sends it straight to you. Direct Shipping is offered on most items of €1,000 or less in eligible regions.
Sources: Vestiaire authentication fees, Shipping with Authentication, Vestiaire shipping options
If an item is not authentic. Order canceled and refunded in full. Direct Shipping orders have 72 hours after delivery to report an issue.
eBay Authenticity Guarantee
How it works. Listings with the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark ship to an authentication center after purchase. Category experts run a multi-point inspection and confirm that the condition matches the listing. On eBay.com the program covers sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins. eBay.co.uk runs it for sneakers, fashion, handbags, watches, trading cards and jewelry sent to a UK address.

If an item is not authentic. Full refund. If an item is authentic but differs slightly from the listing, eBay asks the buyer whether to go ahead or take a refund.
StockX
How it works. On the Verified Marketplace every order is either inspected by StockX verification experts before it ships or shipped directly by a StockX Verified Seller. Live Marketplace items ship straight from the seller. On the Listings Marketplace, verification can be bought on select items.

Poshmark
How it works. Posh Authenticate covers select luxury items priced at $500 or more. The order goes to Poshmark for expert review before delivery, usually within 1 to 3 business days of arrival. Items bought from Poshmark's trusted independent partners arrive already certified.

If an item is not authentic. Order canceled with a full refund. All orders are also covered by Posh Protect, with 72 hours after delivery to open a return case.
Vinted
How it works. Item Verification is an optional service the buyer adds at checkout on selected designer listings marked with a diamond badge. Experts check authenticity at the hub, usually within 1 to 2 business days, and do not assess condition. Vinted lists the service in 14 European markets, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. On the UK site it applies to listings of £85 or more from eligible brands, traded within the UK.
Sources: Vinted UK Item Verification, Vinted international help
If an item is not authentic. The item goes back to the seller and the buyer is refunded in full, fees included.
Mercari
How it works. Mercari Authenticate sends the seller's photos to Real Authentication, an independent authentication company. Approved items show a diamond badge. The review is done from photos, and neither company takes possession of the item. It is optional for most sellers and required above a price point that varies by brand and category.
Sources: Mercari Authenticate, Mercari fees and certificates, Mercari Authenticate terms
If an item is not authentic. Listings that cannot be verified as authentic are removed.
Grailed
How it works. Grailed Verified listings are assessed before they reach the feed: human review of the listing's digital content for items Grailed treats as high-risk, machine moderation for other items, or review by a vetted partner. Where a listing has no Grailed Verified card, Grailed says either verification is not required for that item or the listing has not yet been reviewed.
Sources: Grailed Verification, Grailed Purchase Protection
If an item is not authentic. Grailed Purchase Protection applies if Grailed deems a received item inauthentic. Issues must be reported within 3 calendar days of receiving the item.
Depop
How it works. Depop's Community Guidelines say it removes counterfeit goods listed for sale.
Sources: Depop Community Guidelines, Depop on items not as described
If an item is not authentic. Depop lists counterfeit items among the cases it treats as significantly not as described. It reviews these for purchases made through the Depop BUY button, and buyers who qualify for Depop Protection are covered.
Policies change. Treat the table as a map and confirm the details on the listing page before you pay.
Platforms That Hold the Item
The RealReal, Fashionphile and Rebag take the item in before you see it, so the check happens before a listing goes live. Read the return and refund terms before you buy. If you want more detail on one of them, read our review of Rebag.
The RealReal is a luxury consignment marketplace. It says every piece is examined first by its own software and then inspected by a human expert before it is approved for sale, and that if a buyer doubts an item it will reauthenticate it and refund the purchase if it fails inspection.
Fashionphile says every ultra-luxury handbag or accessory it receives goes through a multi-step authentication by a brand expert. Each piece sold carries a digital Certificate of Authenticity, and Fashionphile states that it guarantees authenticity or returns 100% of the money.
Rebag says every item gets an in-house, multilayered evaluation by its authentication experts before it is listed, and that it honors a full refund on return of the bag if a verified authenticator proves it inauthentic.
Marketplaces That Verify in the Middle
On eBay, Vestiaire Collective, StockX, GOAT, Poshmark and Vinted, the marketplace verifies the item when the order qualifies. On eBay that means the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark. On Vestiaire Collective it means choosing Authenticated Shipping. On Poshmark it means an eligible item at $500 or more. On Vinted the buyer adds Item Verification at checkout. The service is shown on each listing, so check the one you are buying. Our guide to buying pre-owned luxury on eBay walks through that marketplace step by step.
Vestiaire Collective offers two routes. With Authenticated Shipping the item goes to a Vestiaire hub for authentication and quality control, and the order is canceled and refunded in full if it is not approved. It costs $15 per item on the US help page, or is included in the buyer service fee when Direct Shipping is not available. With Direct Shipping the seller sends the item to the buyer, who has 72 hours after delivery to report an issue.
eBay Authenticity Guarantee sends eligible items to an authentication center, where category experts carry out a multi-point inspection and confirm that the condition matches the listing before the item is shipped to the buyer. On eBay.com it is free on eligible handbags from $500, watches from $2,000 and sneakers from $75, and the program also covers jewelry, streetwear, trading cards and coins. eBay.co.uk runs it for items delivered in the UK. If an item does not pass, the buyer is refunded in full.
StockX describes three marketplaces. On the Verified Marketplace every order is either inspected by StockX verification experts before it ships or shipped directly by a StockX Verified Seller. Live Marketplace and Listings Marketplace items ship from the seller, and verification can be bought on select Listings items. Every purchase is backed by the StockX Buyer Promise.
GOAT says every product is verified by digital authentication, in-hand verification, machine learning or a combination of these. On Ship-to-Verify orders its authentication specialists inspect the item, and if it is found inauthentic GOAT provides the same item from another seller or a full refund.
Posh Authenticate covers select luxury items priced at $500 or more on Poshmark. The order is sent to Poshmark's authentication facility for expert review before delivery, at no extra cost, and is canceled with a full refund if authenticity cannot be verified. All orders are also covered by Posh Protect.
Vinted's Item Verification is an optional paid service on selected designer listings, shown with a diamond badge. The item goes to a verification hub where experts check authenticity. Vinted lists the service in 14 European markets. On the UK site it costs £10, applies to listings of £85 or more from eligible brands, and a failed item is returned to the seller with a full refund to the buyer.
Marketplaces That Review the Listing
Mercari and Grailed review photos and listing content, and Depop removes counterfeit listings and treats counterfeit items as a buyer protection case. These reviews work from the listing, so clear photos matter. An independent authentication from the same photos is a simple second opinion. See our review of Grailed for how its buyer protection works in practice.
Mercari Authenticate sends the seller's photos of eligible wallets, shoes, eyewear, jewelry, watches and handbags to Real Authentication, an independent authentication company. Approved listings show a diamond badge, and listings that cannot be verified as authentic are removed.
Grailed Verified listings are assessed by Grailed or its vetted partners before they reach the feed, using human review of the listing's digital content for items Grailed treats as high-risk and machine moderation for others. Grailed Purchase Protection applies if Grailed deems a received item inauthentic and the buyer reports it within 3 calendar days.
Depop's Community Guidelines say it removes counterfeit goods listed for sale. Depop lists counterfeit items among the cases it treats as significantly not as described, and reviews them for purchases made through the Depop BUY button.
What an “Authenticated” Badge Covers: Six Things to Check
An authenticated badge describes one check, on one order, under conditions set by the platform. Six things tell you how it applies to the item you are looking at: the price threshold, whether the service is optional, whether it is physical or photo-based, what it covers, who carries it out, and how long you have to report a problem.
- Price thresholds. On eBay.com, eligible handbags from $500 are authenticated at no cost to the buyer, and handbags from $200 to $499.99 can be authenticated for $40 at checkout. Poshmark's Posh Authenticate covers select luxury items at $500 or more. On Vinted's UK site, Item Verification is offered on eligible listings from £85. Thresholds differ by country and category, so read the listing.
- Services you choose at checkout. On Vestiaire Collective you pick between Authenticated Shipping and Direct Shipping where both are offered. On Vinted, the buyer adds Item Verification at checkout.
- Photo or physical. Mercari's partner works from the seller's photos, and Grailed reviews the listing's digital content. GOAT says some of its products are verified by methods that do not include a physical examination.
- What the check covers. eBay's inspection also confirms that the condition matches the listing. Vinted's Item Verification covers authenticity and not condition.
- Who carries out the check. Platform authentication is done by the platform or its partner, independently of the brands. eBay, Poshmark, Vinted, Rebag and Mercari each say so on their own pages.
- Reporting windows. Vestiaire Collective gives 72 hours after a Direct Shipping delivery. Poshmark gives 72 hours after delivery to open a return case. Grailed asks for issues to be reported within 3 calendar days of receiving the item. On Vinted's UK site the window is 2 days from a standard seller and 14 days from a Pro seller.
No authentication method, physical or photo-based, is error-free. That is why platforms pair their checks with refund terms and reporting windows. Whatever badge a listing carries, look closely at what you receive and act inside the window.
How to Authenticate a Pre-Owned Luxury Item Before You Buy
To authenticate a pre-owned luxury item before buying, confirm which platform protection applies to the listing, get close photos of the details authenticators rely on, compare the price with recent sales, read the seller's history, keep the payment on the platform, and have the photos checked by an independent authenticator before you pay or while the return window is open.
- Confirm the protection on this exact listing. Look for the badge or checkmark, the shipping option and the price threshold from the table above. Do not assume a check applies because the site offers one.
- Ask for the photos an authenticator needs. The overall item from each side, the brand stamp or logo, the serial number or date code, hardware engravings, the interior label, the stitching and any packaging. A seller with a real item can take these in minutes. Refusal is information.
- Compare the price with the market. Look up recent sales of the same model in the same condition. A large gap needs a reason you can verify.
- Read the seller's history. Length of time on the platform, volume, and how the seller answered complaints. Look for reviews that mention authenticity.
- Treat paperwork as supporting evidence. Receipts, cards and dust bags are copied along with the item. If the item comes with a certificate, check who issued it and that the details match. We explain what a certificate should contain in why used designer bags need authenticity certification.
- Pay inside the platform. Buyer protection applies to purchases made through the platform's own checkout. Poshmark, Grailed and Depop each state that deals made outside the platform are not covered.
- Get an independent authentication. Send the photos to professional authenticators before you pay, or as soon as the item arrives.
If you want to look at the item yourself first, start with a category guide: how to tell if a designer purse is real, how to authenticate designer clothes and how to spot fake shoes. For a specific model, we have step-by-step guides such as how to authenticate a Louis Vuitton bag, the Hermès Kelly authentication guide and the Rolex Submariner authentication guide. Sneaker buyers can start with our Jordan 1 authentication guide.
Buying From a Resale Site?
Send the seller's photos before the money moves
verifiedAuthenticate an ItemHow to Tell If a Discounted Luxury Item Is Legitimate
A discount is not a warning sign by itself. Outlets, off-price retailers and pre-owned sellers all sell genuine luxury goods below full price. The warning signs are in how the offer is made: a price far below recent resale prices, pressure to pay at once, payment outside a protected checkout, and a seller you cannot trace.
- The price has no explanation. Check recent sales of the same model and condition. Real discounts sit near that level.
- You are being rushed. Countdown claims, "last one" messages and requests to decide today are sales pressure. A seller with a genuine item can wait for your questions.
- The payment method has no protection. Bank transfer, gift cards and payment links sent in chat leave you without a dispute route.
- The seller has no history. No reviews, a new account, no company details, or reviews that repeat the same wording.
- The website imitates a known retailer. Look at the address bar. A copied logo and layout on an unfamiliar domain is a common pattern.
- The photos are not of this item. Stock images or pictures reused across listings tell you nothing about what will arrive. Ask for a new photo with a detail you choose.

Where an Independent Authentication Fits
An independent authentication is a second opinion that belongs to the buyer. It works on any platform and in private sales, because it is done from photos and the item never has to be shipped to a third party. Buyers use it most on listings that are not routed through a platform's own inspection, in private sales, and on high-value items where they want a second opinion.
LegitGrails is an independent authentication service that works alongside any marketplace. You choose the brand, upload photos of the item, and our team reviews them. What you get:
- Authentication by a team of over 20 professional authenticators, with over 99.89% accuracy.
- Results in under 30 minutes, with authentication and support running 24/7.
- A certificate with every order, including a written explanation of the result.
- Coverage of 600+ brands across bags, watches, jewelry, shoes, clothing and accessories.
You can use it at two points. Before you pay, send the seller's photos and decide with the result in hand. After delivery, photograph the item yourself and get the result while the platform's reporting window is still open. If the result raises a concern, use the platform's own claim process. You can include the certificate with your evidence. Each platform decides claims under its own policy.
Start from the brand list if you know the brand, or use the all-brands authentication service for anything else. You can read about the people who do the work on our authentication experts page.

verifiedAuthenticate an ItemIf the Item Has Already Arrived
If the item is already in your hands, the clock matters more than anything else. Photograph it on the day it arrives, keep all tags and packaging attached, get it authenticated at once, and open a claim through the platform before its reporting window closes.
- Photograph the unboxing. The parcel, the label and the item from every side, before you remove any tag.
- Do not wear it or detach anything. Some platforms attach their own tag after inspection and expect it to be in place if you return the item.
- Check your window. 72 hours on a Vestiaire Collective Direct Shipping order, 72 hours on Poshmark, 3 calendar days on Grailed, and on Vinted's UK site 2 days from a standard seller or 14 days from a Pro seller. Other platforms set their own limits, so read your order page.
- Order an authentication the same day. A result in under 30 minutes leaves time to act inside even the shortest window.
- Open the claim on the platform. Use the platform's own form and keep all messages there.
Selling a Luxury Item? Authenticate It First
Sellers benefit from authentication for the same reason buyers do. A listing that already carries an independent certificate answers the buyer's first question, and it gives the seller a dated record of the item's status before it ships.
Photograph the details listed above, order the authentication, and add the certificate to the listing photos where the platform's listing rules allow it. If you are choosing where to list, see our guides to the best places to sell designer bags and the best places to sell luxury watches. Frequently Asked Questions
Which platforms ensure authenticity when buying from resellers?
The RealReal, Fashionphile and Rebag authenticate every item in-house before it is listed. eBay Authenticity Guarantee, Vestiaire Collective, StockX, GOAT, Poshmark and Vinted verify qualifying orders between the seller and the buyer. Mercari and Grailed review photos and listing content, and Depop moderates listings and covers counterfeit items under its buyer protection. Each service has conditions, so read the listing for the badge, the price threshold and the shipping option.
What is the most reliable authentication in luxury resale?
We have not found a published like-for-like comparison of accuracy between resale platforms, so this guide does not rank them. Compare the method instead: whether the item is physically inspected, at what point in the sale, on which orders, and what the platform does if the item does not pass. For a high-value item, many buyers add an independent second opinion from photos before they pay.
How do I verify authenticity when buying secondhand designer items?
Confirm which protection applies to the exact listing, ask the seller for close photos of the logo stamp, serial or date code, hardware and interior label, compare the price with recent sales, read the seller's history, and pay inside the platform. Then have the photos checked by an independent authenticator before you pay or while the return window is still open.
How can I tell if a discounted luxury item is legitimate?
Compare the price with recent resale prices for the same model and condition. A price far below that level, pressure to pay quickly, payment by bank transfer or gift card, a seller with no traceable history, and a site that imitates a known retailer are the common warning signs. Outlets, off-price stores and pre-owned sellers do offer real discounts, so check the seller and the item, not the discount alone.
Can I request an authentication report before buying a pre-owned item?
Yes. Ask the seller for the photos an authenticator needs and submit them to an independent service before you pay. LegitGrails reviews the photos and issues a certificate with every order, with a written explanation of the result. A seller who will not provide clear photos of the key details is a reason to pause.
Where can I find resellers that provide an authenticity certificate?
Fashionphile includes a digital Certificate of Authenticity with each piece it sells, and Rebag issues its own authenticity certificates. Vinted sends a digital Item Verification report with items that pass its optional verification. On Mercari, eligible items can carry a certificate from Real Authentication. On any other platform or in a private sale, you can order an independent certificate yourself from the seller's photos.
How do I authenticate a designer item before buying it?
You need photos, not the item. Collect clear, close shots of the overall item, the brand stamp or logo, the serial number or date code, the hardware engravings, the interior label and the stitching. Compare them with a brand guide, then send them to professional authenticators for a verdict before the money moves.
Can I get my luxury item authenticated before selling it?
Yes. Photograph the item, order an authentication and, where the platform's listing rules allow it, add the certificate to your listing. It answers the buyer's first question before it is asked, and it gives you a record of the item's status on the day it left your hands.
How this comparison was made: every platform detail was taken from that platform's own public pages, linked in the table, and read on October 13, 2026. Where a platform publishes different terms by country, the row names the pages used. Policies change, so confirm the details on the listing before you pay. This guide is independent. No platform paid for, reviewed or endorsed it, and platform names are used only to describe their published policies. If you work at one of these platforms and a detail is out of date, contact our team and we will correct it.
