BALENCIAGA CODE CHECK

Balenciaga serial number checker, the letter on the interior tag

Enter the single letter from the interior tag. If you are not sure which run your bag is from, leave the question alone.

Which does the bag look like?

This checker does not tell you whether your Balenciaga is genuine. A interior tag letter can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Balenciaga authenticated by an expert

IN SHORT

What a Balenciaga interior tag letter actually tells you

A Balenciaga serial number checker has to read a letter rather than a number: what people call the Balenciaga serial is a single letter stamped on the interior tag, and it gives the season the bag was made. The system started in Fall/Winter 2003 and has since run through the alphabet again, so letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, each point to two seasons about twelve years apart. The tag itself separates them: the earlier run carries a metal plate, the later run has the letter stamped on the label.

The letter dates the bag to a season. It does not prove it is genuine. Counterfeiters copy these letters exactly, so a correct letter on the wrong hardware generation is a red flag rather than a reassurance.

The alphabet has now wrapped three times. Letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, appear in both the 2003 to 2008 and 2009 to 2021 runs, and K to R appear in both the 2009 to 2012 and 2022 to 2025 runs. The letter alone cannot separate them, so every affected letter returns both years.

WHERE TO LOOK

Finding the interior tag letter on your Balenciaga

2022 On the back of the interior label, beside the serial. The alphabet wrapped a third time. Balenciaga keeps walking backwards through the letters, so the eight letters in this run were all used before, in 2009 to 2012. A letter on its own cannot separate the two, which is why this checker offers both readings rather than the older one alone.
2009 On the back of the interior label, beside the serial. On this run the letter is stamped on the label itself rather than on a metal plate. The serial digits may be typed in front of the letter, they are ignored.
2003 On the metal plate, after the first sequence of numbers. Only letters A to D, and S to Z apart from X, appear in both runs. The metal plate is the tell: the earlier run has one and the later run does not. The serial digits may be typed in front of the letter, they are ignored.

If you cannot find a letter

Look on the small interior reference tag, often behind the main leather logo tab, inside a pocket or along a seam. On the earlier run the letter follows the first block of digits on a metal plate; on the later run it is stamped on the back of the label beside the serial. Bags made before Fall/Winter 2003 predate the system entirely.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Balenciaga interior tag letter questions

The things people actually ask us about Balenciaga interior tag letters, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

Where is the letter on a Balenciaga bag?

On the small interior reference tag, often behind the main leather logo tab, inside a pocket or along a seam. On older bags it follows the first block of digits on a metal plate.

Why does one letter give two different seasons?

Because Balenciaga has run through the alphabet more than once, roughly every twelve years. Letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, each cover two seasons, and the number alone cannot separate them.

How do I tell which run my bag is from?

The metal plate. The earlier run, from 2003, carries one and the letter sits after the first sequence of numbers. The later run has no plate and the letter is stamped on the back of the label.

Does the letter tell me the exact month?

No. It gives a season, Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter, and the year. That is as precise as the system gets.

My bag has no letter at all.

It may predate the system, which started in Fall/Winter 2003, or the tag may be worn. Neither is evidence of a fake on its own.

Does a correct letter mean my Balenciaga is authentic?

No. Counterfeiters copy these letters exactly. What matters is whether the letter agrees with the hardware generation, the rivets, the zipper maker and the tassel style.

Why is X missing from the older run?

Balenciaga skipped X in the first pass through the alphabet, which is why the letter appears only once in our table while its neighbours appear twice.

What are the numbers next to the letter?

A style and production reference. Only the letter carries the season.
