What a Saint Laurent serial number actually tells you
A Saint Laurent serial ends in four digits that give the production date: the first two are the month and the last two are the year. A serial ending 0721 was made in July 2021. Everything in front of those four digits is a model and production reference and carries no date. People search for this as a YSL authentication number or an authenticity check code, and on a Saint Laurent it is the same number, the one on the leather tag inside. You can check it online here. The rule is documented for the Saint Laurent Paris tag introduced with the 2012 rebrand, so this checker reads 2012 onward and tells you plainly when a piece is older than the record it can stand behind.
The date tells you when the piece was made, which is enough to rule out a bag whose model did not exist yet. It does not prove the piece is genuine. Read the last four digits: the month, then the year. The tag is cut from the bag's own leather and is often the color of the lining, so photograph it in raking light before deciding a digit is a 0 rather than an 8.

On a smaller leather tag sewn into the lining of wallets and card holders, in the same format as on a bag. The last four digits read exactly the same way.

Saint Laurent belts and the underside stamp
Stamped on the underside of the belt, usually near the buckle. No professional reference publishes a rule for belts, so if the marking ends in four digits that make a real month and year the bag reading applies, and if it carries only a style reference and a size there is no date to read.
Not separately documented, so treat a belt reading as the bag rule applied to a piece the references do not illustrate.

Look for a rectangular leather tag sewn into the lining, usually near the top zip and cut from the same leather as the bag, so it is easy to miss on a dark interior. The serial is on its reverse. Small leather goods carry it in the same place but on a smaller tag. If what you find is twelve digits in two groups of six, with no three letter prefix in front, that is the older Yves Saint Laurent marking rather than the current one, and it carries no date group for anyone to read.

Does a valid serial prove my Saint Laurent is real?
