Saint Laurent serial number checker, read the month and year
Enter the serial from the leather tag, or just the last four digits if that is all you can read.
This checker does not tell you whether your Saint Laurent is genuine. A serial number can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Saint Laurent authenticated by an expert
What a Saint Laurent serial number actually tells you
A Saint Laurent serial ends in four digits that give the production date: the first two are the month and the last two are the year. A serial ending 0721 was made in July 2021. Everything in front of those four digits is a model and production reference and carries no date. The rule is documented for the Saint Laurent Paris tag introduced with the 2012 rebrand, so this checker reads 2012 onward and tells you plainly when a piece is older than the record it can stand behind.
The date tells you when the piece was made, which is enough to rule out a bag whose model did not exist yet. It does not prove the piece is genuine. On Saint Laurent the shape of the digits is where the real signal sits, and on older pieces that face closely resembles the one Gucci uses.
Saint Laurent serial numbers era by era
| Era | What the marking looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Serial ending in month and year | A serial whose last four digits are the month then the year | MAL6572280721 → July 2021 |
| The date group on its own, four digits | Just the last four digits | 0721 → July 2021 |

Finding the serial number on your Saint Laurent
If you cannot find the serial
Look for a rectangular leather tag sewn into the lining, usually near the top zip and cut from the same leather as the bag, so it is easy to miss on a dark interior. The serial is on its reverse. Small leather goods carry it in the same place but on a smaller tag.
Saint Laurent serial number questions
The things people actually ask us about Saint Laurent serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
Where is the serial on a Saint Laurent bag?
On a rectangular leather tag sewn into the lining, usually near the top zip. The tag is cut from the same leather as the bag, so on a dark interior it is easy to miss. The serial is on its reverse.
Which part of the serial is the date?
Only the last four digits, and they are read straight through rather than interleaved: the first two are the month, the last two the year. So 1017 is October 2017.
What do the letters and digits in front mean?
They are a model and production reference. They identify what the piece is and where it was made, not when.
Does a valid serial prove my Saint Laurent is real?
No. Counterfeiters reproduce serials, including the date portion. Our own reference book prints a counterfeit tag whose last four digits decode perfectly well. What separates them is the typeface and the depth of the stamping.
What should the digits look like?
On older pieces the face is close to the one Gucci uses on its leather goods, and on newer pieces closer to the Gucci belt face. Even, cleanly struck characters with consistent proportions.
My serial decodes to a month that does not exist, what now?
Almost always a misread digit rather than a fake. Photograph the tag in raking light and check again before drawing a conclusion, because the tag is often the same colour as the lining and hard to read.
Does this work on small leather goods?
Yes. Wallets and card holders carry the same format on a smaller tag in the same place.
How far back does this go?
To 2012. Both of our reference books document this numbering for the Saint Laurent Paris tag that arrived with the rebrand, and neither publishes any date rule for the earlier Yves Saint Laurent tags. So the checker reads 2012 onward and, on anything older, tells you it cannot read a date instead of inventing one. Treat 2012 itself as the changeover year rather than a hard line.
