Gucci serial number checker, the serial, and the tag that does give a year
Type either number. The serial from the leather tab tells you the design and the supplier batch. The code on the black fabric tag inside the bag tells you the year.
Which model is it?
The number on the leather tab inside the bag. It identifies the design and supplier batch, not the year.
Which year is it?
The black fabric tag sewn inside, in a pocket or along a seam. Its code is the one Gucci marking with a year.
What a Gucci serial number actually tells you
A Gucci bag carries two different numbers and they answer two different questions. The serial on the leather logo tab identifies the design and the supplier batch. It encodes no production date and no country, so any tool that turns that number into a year or a place is guessing. The black fabric tag sewn inside the bag is the one that dates it: the three digits after its leading letter are a year group, running from 2014 to 2024. Type either number above and this page will tell you which one you have and what it can say.
A leather tab serial that matches the documented format tells you the structure is right. That number does not date the item, does not say where it was made, and does not authenticate it. Check the six-digit style number against your receipt, and look at the digits themselves, because Gucci's own design is where the real signal is: a double-line face where the 0 is thick at the sides and thin top and bottom, the 8 is smaller on top than underneath, and the 6 and 9 are exact mirrors of each other. The black tag adds a year, and nothing more. That year comes from a chart published by resellers rather than by Gucci, and the two independent versions of it agree up to 2022 and disagree above it, so treat a 2023 or 2024 reading as give or take a year. A year that fits the model is a floor, not a verdict, because a copied tag can carry a plausible number too.

Which Gucci number is which, and which of them carry no date at all
One six digit style code is the spine of nearly everything Gucci makes. On a bag or a small leather good the interior leather tab prints that style code with a supplier code after it. The same design appears in full on the box label, the care card and gucci.com's own product URLs as a 15 character product code, split style (6), material and print (5), colour (4), which is why two items sharing the first six characters are the same design in different materials. Gucci's own slugs bear that out: where one six digit code carries several names, they are the same design renamed or remade in another material, not a code reused for something else, though Gucci is not always consistent about the size word it attaches. This page looks those leading six characters up against an index built from Gucci's own product URLs and tells you which design they belong to. The index is deliberately partial: it covers the bags, the small leather goods and the recognised families, because those are what people bring to a serial number checker, and a code it does not hold is not a negative result. Eyewear and watches are numbered on schemes of their own, and for both of those the honest answer is a properly sourced negative rather than a decode.

Where the serial number sits on your Gucci
Bags
A Gucci bag carries two separate markings and you need to know which one you are looking at. The serial is on the REVERSE of the interior leather tab that carries the logo, sewn near the top of the lining or beside a zip, and never on a side seam: on a current bag the whole code runs 10 to 13 figures, most often six over six or six over four, while older tabs print a shorter style number broken by a dot. The second marking is the small black fabric tag sewn inside, usually in an interior pocket or along a seam near the zip, printed with a letter followed by digits and normally a square of dots beside it. That black tag is the only marking on the bag that carries a production year.
A Gucci bag serial number check reads the leather tab, and the tab gives the design and the supplier batch only. If there is no black fabric tag, there is no year to read, and that is normal on an older bag rather than a fault.
Wallets and small leather goods
Wallets, card cases and Wallet on Chain styles carry the same kind of interior leather tab, usually sewn into the note compartment or set behind the card slots rather than at a lining seam. They commonly print the whole code on ONE row, the style number first and the supplier code after it. Enter it exactly as it reads, including any leading zeros: 002058 is a genuine six digit style code that looks like a four digit one, and stripping the zeros is what turns a real code into an unrecognised one.
Small leather goods frequently have no black fabric tag at all, so on a wallet there is usually no year available from any marking. The photograph shows this tab on a bag, and its digits read inverted in the original shot.
Belts
On the reverse of the strap, towards the buckle end, stamped into the leather rather than printed on a sewn in tab. A belt code is not laid out like a bag serial: the authenticator handbook decomposes a worked example as style number, then size, then supplier code, against a marking reading 411924 KGDHN 85 34 1476, and notes that the belt digit typeface is not the same as the leather tab typeface on a bag. So the shape this page documents for a leather tab will not match what is on your belt.
No published source dates a Gucci belt from its code, and this page will not offer a year for one. The size figure is the part you can check against the belt in your hands, and the style number is the part that should match the listing.
Shoes and sneakers
Gucci footwear uses the same six digit style code as the bags, but it is normally printed on the box label and on the size label rather than stamped inside the shoe, and on that label it appears as the full 15 character product code: style, then material and print, then colour. Only the first six characters identify the design.
No published source maps any marking on a Gucci shoe to a production year, so if a listing gives you one, ask which source it came from.
Sunglasses and eyewear
Inside the temple arm, printed along the inner face: GG and four digits for the model, then three digits for the colourway, and usually a size group such as 57 16 140, separated by a small square, which is the eye size, the bridge width and the temple length. A letter after the model number is the type, S for sunglasses and O for optical.
Gucci eyewear carries NO date code. We enumerated the licensee's own conformity documents across 970 Gucci models and none of them dates the frame: the model code is what satisfies the legal duty to mark a type or batch, so there is no date component to decode. Any site reading a year from a Gucci sunglass marking is inventing it. That proof covers sunglasses only, because the document it rests on exists only for sunglasses. For prescription frames we looked for the rule that would settle it: the marking clause of the international spectacle frame standard is normative, is titled Marking, and sits behind a paywall, so we have not read it. What we can say is that no description of a Gucci optical temple we have found carries anything but the model, the colourway, the size group, Made in Italy and the conformity mark. Treat that as no date found rather than as proof there is none.
Watches
Two numbers, on two different parts of the watch. The reference begins YA and is printed on the papers and the case back, and its first three digits name the collection: YA126 G-Timeless, YA136 Dive, YA142 Interlocking, YA167 Model 2000. The per unit serial is engraved on the case back itself, and Gucci gives its length as eight numbers in English and as eight or nine digits in Japanese, so we do not judge a watch by the length of its serial.
No Gucci watch number encodes a date. Gucci's own warranty registration asks the owner for the invoice date beside the serial, which it would not need to do if the serial carried it. For the year, use the warranty certificate: paper before 1 March 2022, digital after.
If your bag has no black tag
The published year chart for the black fabric tag starts at 2014, and no part of it comes from Gucci. Sources disagree about when the tag itself was introduced, so an older Gucci may not carry one at all, and its serial alone will not give you a year. That is normal and it is not a fault. Several sites will still return a production year for a leather tab serial: there is no date encoded in that number, so any year they show you from those digits is invented. To date an older piece the route is the style number against the collection it belongs to. Two more things you may find and should not mistake for a date: the pattern of dots on the black tag is a Data Matrix rather than a QR code, and it does scan, with a Data Matrix reader rather than a QR-only app. What it gives back is normally just the same code already printed beside it, so there is no date hidden in it either. It is still worth scanning for one reason: the scanned value and the printed value should match, and a bag where they disagree deserves a much closer look. The controllato card in the bag is a quality-control record, stamped by Gucci to show the piece passed inspection, rather than a production date; it travels separately from the bag and is often missing on resale, so its absence proves nothing either way.
Gucci serial number questions
The things people actually ask us about Gucci serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
Can I tell the year my Gucci was made from the serial?
Not from the serial on the leather tab, and be wary of any tool that says otherwise, because that number encodes a design and a supplier batch rather than a date or a place. You can from the black fabric tag inside the bag, if the piece is from 2014 or later: the three digits after its leading letter are the production year.
What do the two rows of numbers mean?
The upper row is the style number, six digits that identify the design, and it should match the style code on your receipt. The lower row is the supplier code, which works more like a batch number, so two bags made in the same batch can share it. Wallets and WOC styles often carry both on one row.
Where do I find the serial on a Gucci bag?
On the reverse of the interior leather tab carrying the logo, usually sewn near the top of the lining or beside a zip, and never on a side seam. On a current piece the whole code runs 10 to 13 figures across the two rows, most often six over six or six over four. Older tags print a shorter style number broken by a dot and run shorter overall, and this checker accepts those too. On belts it sits on the strap and follows a different structure, which the authenticator handbook sets out as style number, then size, then supplier code.
What is the small black label inside my Gucci?
A silk care and identification label with its own tells: pale blue ink that breaks up horizontally against the weave, a coated face that often looks washed out at the top, and a code beginning with a letter.
Does a valid serial mean my Gucci is authentic?
No. Fakes carry correctly formatted serials as a matter of course. What separates them is the typeface and the stamping: genuine digits are a double-line face with consistent internal proportions, and copies almost always get the weight distribution wrong.
Is a Gucci code checker the same as a serial number checker, and can I check mine online for free?
Yes to both. Code checker, serial number check and date code checker all describe this one job, and this page does it free with no account. What matters is which code you are holding. The leather tab serial is a style code over a supplier code and carries no date, so nothing can turn it into a year. The black fabric tag code does carry one, from 2014 on, and this page reads it. Be clear about the limit that applies to every such tool: Gucci publishes no public serial number database, so no site can confirm from a number alone that an item is genuine. What an honest check gives you is whether the structure matches a documented Gucci format, which design the style code belongs to, and the production year when the black tag is there to read.
Can the code pattern on my Gucci black tag tell me the year?
Yes, but from the number printed on the tag, not from the symbol. That pattern is a Data Matrix, not a QR code, so a QR-only app will not see it at all; a Data Matrix reader will. When it does read, what comes back is normally the same code already printed beside it, so there is no date and no hidden record inside it. Scan it anyway for one reason: printed and scanned should agree, and a mismatch is a red flag worth acting on. The year is in the number PRINTED on the same black tag: one letter, then three digits that are a year group. 033 or 034 is 2021, 035 or 036 is 2022, and the chart runs from 2014 to 2024. Two things to hold lightly about that chart. It is published by resellers and not by Gucci, who documents this code nowhere. And the two independent versions of it match exactly up to group 036 and diverge above it: one reads 037 to 039 as 2023 and 040 to 042 as 2024, while the other runs strictly two groups to a year, putting 041 and 042 in 2025. So a group of 037 or higher may be a year later than we show. Type that number above. On a genuine tag the printing is thin and looks slightly faded against the black, and the code sits clear of the seam.
Do Gucci sunglasses and watches have a date code?
No, and both answers are settled rather than unknown. On eyewear the marking inside the temple is a model code, GG followed by four digits, then three more for the colourway and often a size group such as 57 16 140, which is the eye size, the bridge and the temple length. We enumerated Kering Eyewear's own conformity documents for 970 Gucci models and not one of them dates the frame: the model code is what satisfies the legal duty to mark a type or batch, so there is no date to find. On watches the YA number names the collection and the case back serial names the individual watch, and neither encodes a date. The proof is Gucci's own warranty registration, which asks the owner to type the invoice date next to the serial, something it would not need to do if the serial carried it. For a watch year, the warranty certificate is the document: paper before 1 March 2022, digital after.
