CHANEL CODE CHECK

Chanel serial number checker, find the series and the years

Enter the digits from the sticker inside your bag.

This checker does not tell you whether your Chanel is genuine. A serial number can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Chanel authenticated by an expert

IN SHORT

What a Chanel serial number actually tells you

A Chanel serial is a running number whose leading digits give the series. A seven-digit code reads its first digit, an eight-digit code its first two, so 10097628 is the 10 series and points to 2005 to 2006. Series were issued as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most straddle two years. From 2021 the sticker began to be replaced by a metal plate and an embedded chip, and the last series, 32, ran on into 2022.

The series places a bag in a production window. It does not prove the bag is genuine. The sticker itself carries more signal than the number on it: the font, the cut lines through it, and how it is applied all changed over the years, from no cut line to two crossing cuts to the four on current bags.

A Chanel series is a production window, not a year. The series were issued as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most of them straddle two years and the honest answer is the span.

WHERE TO LOOK

Finding the serial number on your Chanel

1984-2022 On a sticker inside the bag, often under a flap or inside a pocket, protected by a clear film. The series is everything before the last six digits: a seven-digit code reads its first digit, an eight-digit code its first two. The rest is a running number and carries no date.
NO CODE

If your bag has a plate instead of a sticker

From 2021 Chanel began replacing stickers and paper authenticity cards with a metal plate and an embedded chip. It was a rollout rather than a switch, and the last sticker series, 32, was still going into 2022 on small leather goods, so a 2021 or 2022 piece may carry either. The plate carries a number that matches the invoice rather than a series, so there is nothing to look up here. On older bags the sticker is usually under a flap or inside a pocket, protected by a clear film, and it can be lost without the bag being any less genuine.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Chanel serial number questions

The things people actually ask us about Chanel serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

How do I read which series my bag is?

Drop the last six digits and read what is left. A seven-digit serial has one leading digit, an eight-digit serial has two. So 1150336 is the 1 series and 10097628 is the 10 series.

Why does the checker give me two years instead of one?

Because Chanel issued each series as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most series straddle two years. The source we use calls its own table approximate, and a single year would be a guess dressed up as an answer.

Where is the sticker on a Chanel bag?

Inside, often under a flap or in a pocket, protected by a clear film. On older bags it can be worn or missing entirely, which is common and not evidence of anything.

My bag has a metal plate, not a sticker.

Then it is from 2021 or later. Chanel began replacing stickers and paper cards with a metal plate and an embedded chip in 2021, though the sticker did not stop dead: the 32 series ran on into 2022, mainly on small leather goods. The plate number matches the invoice rather than a series, so there is no series to read.

Does a valid serial mean my Chanel is authentic?

No. Counterfeit stickers exist and are copied closely. What separates them is the sticker itself: the font, the cut lines through it, and how cleanly it sits under its film.

My serial has more digits than expected.

Check you are reading only the sticker and not a repair or boutique reference. Chanel serials run six to eight digits, and anything longer is usually a different number entirely.

Did Chanel ever publish this chart?

No. Chanel has never published an official serial reference. Every chart in circulation, including the professional handbook this page uses, is compiled from observed bags, which is why the answers are windows.

Can two bags share a serial?

They should not, but the series is shared by everything made in that run, so two bags from the same period will have very similar numbers. That is normal.
