What a Bottega Veneta serial number actually tells you

A Bottega Veneta code identifies the individual item, and on the older interior tag it carries the year as well. That tag reads as a style number, a leather code, a colour code and then a four-digit year of manufacture, sometimes with the letters EPEV printed in front of the year, so 192931 VFFA1 1000 2007 is a 2007 piece. Three published references document that year field, one of them a professional authenticators' handbook that prints a genuine tag reading EPEV 2010 and names the 2010 as the year it was made, and this checker reads it. Bottega Veneta itself has never published what any of the characters mean, and none of the references gives a rule for deriving the year rather than reading it, so the year range this page accepts is our judgement rather than theirs. From around 2010 the tag became a single line with no year printed on its face, and for that one the checker validates the shape and stops there.

On the older tag it gives you the year printed on it, read the way the published references read it. On the later single-line code it tells you only that the shape matches genuine examples, which is a floor and not a verdict. The bigger point on this brand is that the typed characters are the weaker half of the evidence either way: professional reference material authenticates the printing, the ink colour and the shape of individual digits, none of which survive being typed into a box. A photograph of the tag is worth more than the characters on it, which is why an expert asks for the tag rather than the number.

WHERE TO LOOK

Where the serial number sits on your Bottega Veneta

Bags

On a narrow, paper-like tag sewn into the lining. One side carries the Bottega Veneta logo; turn it over and the words ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED sit above the code. On the older layout the code runs over two lines and ends in a four-digit year, sometimes printed behind the letters EPEV. From around 2010 the tag became a single line with no year in it.

Type the whole tag, both lines if it has two. Only the older two-line layout carries a year, and that reading comes from two authentication references rather than from the brand.

Bottega Veneta ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED tag sewn into a bag lining, with the serial number printed beneath the words

Wallets and small leather goods

The same narrow sewn-in tag, on the pieces that have one. Where it is present, read the reverse under ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED exactly as on a bag.

Our references record that the tag is being phased out on small leather goods, so a recent wallet, cardholder or pouch may carry no code at all. That is expected on this brand rather than a fault, and there is no second place to look: nothing we could source describes a Bottega Veneta code anywhere other than this tag.

NO CODE

If your item has no tag

On small leather goods this is increasingly normal, because the sewn-in tag is being phased out for that category. On a handbag, a missing tag is worth more attention, though tags do get cut out by owners who find them uncomfortable, and the stub is often still visible in the lining seam. Either way the bag is judged on its intrecciato weave, its leather and its hardware, which is where Bottega authentication really lives.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Bottega Veneta serial number questions

The things people actually ask us about Bottega Veneta serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

Where is the serial number on a Bottega Veneta?

On a narrow, paper-like tag sewn into the lining. One side carries the Bottega Veneta logo; turn it over and you will find ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED in a block font with the code printed beneath it, on one line or on two.

What year was my Bottega Veneta made?

If your tag ends in a four-digit year, that is your answer and this checker will read it. Three published references document that field on the older layout, one of them putting most bags that carry it between 2008 and 2012. On that layout the code gives the style, the leather, the colour and the year it was made; beyond those fields Bottega Veneta keeps the meaning to itself. Not every tag has a year, and a tag without one is not a fault: around 2010 the layout became a single line with no year printed on its face. What happens on the newest tags is genuinely disputed. The professional handbook says the year information is sewn into the tag rather than printed on it, which would mean a date still exists on a recent piece and cannot be read from outside. Every other authentication reference we could reach says the single-line code is undated, and none of them mentions a year hidden inside the tag. Nobody claims there is a year on the face of it, so either way the date on a recent bag has to come from the hardware, the lining and the construction instead.

How sure are you about the year?

Sure enough to print it, and not a step further. Four independent published references describe the same four-digit field as a year of manufacture, and the strongest of them is a professional authenticators' handbook that photographs a genuine tag reading EPEV 2010 and says plainly that the 2010 is the year the item was made. So this is corroborated across tiers rather than one blog's claim. What none of them publishes is a rule: they read the year off the tag the same way you would, which means the year range this page accepts, 2001 to 2012, is our judgement and not theirs, and a genuine tag could fall outside it. We went looking for one that does and did not find it: every tag anyone has published with a readable year sits between 2007 and 2012, and no reference names a first or a last year, so the window is bounded by what has been seen rather than by anything stated. None of these references is Bottega Veneta either. So treat the year as well corroborated and still formally open: our authenticators have raised the question against pieces they have dated by other means, and this page will say which way it went. We would rather tell you a reading is provisional than print a production year we cannot stand behind.

What does EPEV mean on my Bottega Veneta tag?

On the older two-line tag, EPEV is the prefix that sits in front of the four-digit year, with a lot number printed after it and sometimes a single letter closing the line. Real tags photographed and listed elsewhere read the same way, EPEV 2007 2224A and EPEV 2008 6064 A among them, which is why this checker accepts that closing letter rather than refusing the tag over it. What the four letters stand for is not documented in anything we could find, and the brand has never said. Nor is the closing letter explained anywhere. So EPEV is useful as a signpost, because it tells you which line holds the year, but it is not itself a code you can decode. If that line is all you can read, type it on its own and the checker will still answer.

Is the Bottega Veneta luggage tag the same as the serial tag?

No, and it is worth separating the two. The code lives on the narrow tag sewn into the lining, under the words ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED. A detachable leather tag or fob that came with the bag is not where the code sits, and we have no source describing a Bottega Veneta code printed on one. If you are looking at a hanging tag and finding no number, you are looking at the wrong tag rather than at a bag with no code.

My small leather goods have no tag at all. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. The sewn-in tag is being phased out on small leather goods, so its absence there is expected on recent pieces. On a handbag it deserves more attention, although owners do sometimes cut tags out.

Does a valid code mean my bag is genuine?

No. A correct-looking code is easy to print and counterfeiters do print them, and a year read off a printed tag is only as good as the tag. On this brand especially, the weave tension, the leather quality and the hardware finishing decide it, and those are what an authenticator examines.

Can Bottega Veneta verify a code for me?

Not as a public service. There is no lookup, and no third party has a legitimate copy of the brand's records. A boutique may be willing to look at a piece in person, but there is no number you can submit for verification.
