What a Balenciaga interior tag letter actually tells you

A Balenciaga serial number checker has to read a letter rather than a number: what people call the Balenciaga serial is a single letter on the interior tag, and it gives the season the bag was made. The system started in Fall/Winter 2003 and has since run through the alphabet again, so letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, each point to two seasons about twelve years apart. The tag itself separates them: the earlier run carries a metal plate, while the later run has the letter stamped on the label. So a Balenciaga code check is a season reading, not a date code in the Louis Vuitton sense, and there is no positional date code to take apart here. The letter is one part of a longer number, which a professional reference splits into a style number, a colour number, the year letter and a production line number.

The letter dates the bag to a season. It does not prove it is genuine. Counterfeiters copy these letters exactly, so a correct letter on the wrong hardware generation is a red flag rather than a reassurance. The letter to season key has never been published by Balenciaga: ours is reconstructed, and a professional reference now corroborates the 2007 to 2020 part of it.

The alphabet has now wrapped three times. Letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, appear in both the 2003 to 2008 and 2009 to 2021 runs, and K to R appear in both the 2009 to 2012 and 2022 to 2025 runs. The letter alone cannot separate them, so every affected letter returns both years.

MODEL NUMBERS

What the rest of the interior number means

The letter is one part of a longer number. A professional reference splits the current interior number into four parts, in this order: the style number, the colour number, the year number, which is the single letter this checker reads, and the production line number. Only the year part carries a date. The same reference gives a colour rule that runs across Kering's houses, so a Balenciaga colour block starting 1000 is black and one starting 9000 is white. It also warns that the character in the year part is a fatter o rather than a zero, which is the most common misread on these tags. The interior number in the photograph on this page, 593546 9016 S 1317, has exactly that four-part shape, with S as the year letter.

Part of the number What it records
Style number The first block. It identifies the model, not the date.
Colour number The next block. Across Kering's houses 1000 is black, 9000 is white, 13 then two digits is grey, and blocks from 2000 to 8000 and above are colours.
Year number A single letter. This is the season and year, and it is what this checker reads.
Production line number The last block. It records which line built the piece and carries no date.
WHERE TO LOOK

Where the interior tag letter sits on your Balenciaga

Balenciaga bag serial and season letter location

On the small interior reference tag, often behind the main leather logo tab, inside a pocket or along a seam. Which run the bag belongs to decides where the letter sits in the line.

Current run
Embossed on the interior leather, between the color number and the production line number
2003 to 2008 run
On a metal plate riveted inside the bag, after the first block of digits

Typical marking 593546 9016 S 1317

The plate dates the bag before the letter does: the earlier run has one and the later run does not.

An embossed interior number, the letter between the color and production numbers.

Season letter on Balenciaga wallets and card holders

Embossed on an interior panel rather than on a metal plate. Read the single letter out of that block the same way as on a bag.

Typical marking 656050 1000 R 526147

Our sources illustrate the numbering on bags, so a wallet or card holder reading is the same rule applied to a piece they do not show. A card holder with only digits and no letter has no season to read.

If you cannot find a letter

Look on the small interior reference tag, often behind the main leather logo tab, inside a pocket or along a seam. On the earlier run the letter follows the first block of digits on a metal plate; on the later run it is stamped on the back of the label beside the serial, and on current bags it sits in the middle of the embossed interior number rather than on its own. Bags made before Fall/Winter 2003 predate the system entirely.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Balenciaga interior tag letter questions

The things people actually ask us about Balenciaga interior tag letters, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

Where is the tag letter on a Balenciaga bag?

On the small interior reference tag, often behind the main leather logo tab, inside a pocket or along a seam. On current bags it sits inside the number embossed on the interior leather, between the colour number and the production line number. On older bags it follows the first block of digits on a metal plate.

Why does one letter give two different seasons?

Because Balenciaga has run through the alphabet more than once, roughly every twelve years. Letters A to D and S to Z, X excepted, each cover two seasons, and the letter alone cannot separate them.

How do I tell which run my bag is from?

The metal plate. The earlier run, from 2003, carries one and the letter sits after the first sequence of numbers. The later run has no plate and the letter is stamped on the back of the label.

Does the letter tell me the exact month?

No. It gives a season, Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter, and the year. That is as precise as the system gets.

My bag has no letter at all.

It may predate the system, which started in Fall/Winter 2003, or the tag may be worn. Neither is evidence of a fake on its own.

Does a correct letter mean my Balenciaga is authentic?

No. Counterfeiters copy these letters exactly. What matters is whether the letter agrees with the hardware generation, the rivets, the zipper maker and the tassel style. There is one more check you can run yourself, and it is not about the letter: independent authentication references say the style number printed on the front of the interior label should match the style number on the back. Not every label carries a number on both faces, so a blank face is not a failure, but two different numbers are worth stopping over. That is a consistency tell rather than a date, so it is not part of what this checker returns.

Which season was letter Z?

Z is Fall/Winter 2005 in the first run and Spring/Summer 2018 in the second, and both are right, because they are two different passes of the same letter. A single outlier page reads the first run as starting at Z with Spring/Summer 2005; every dating chart we could check puts A in Spring/Summer 2005 and Z in the Fall/Winter half, and dealer listings for colours that only existed in Fall/Winter 2005, Rouge Théâtre and Magenta among them, describe the bags as carrying a Z stamp. What reconciles the two Z entries is that the run skips X once: one missing letter shifts the seasons by half a year the next time round, which is why Z lands on Fall/Winter the first time and Spring/Summer the second. Our professional reference prints Z as Spring/Summer in its 2018 row, and that agrees.

What are the numbers next to the letter?

A style number, a colour number and a production line number, in that order around the year letter. Only the letter carries the season. One thing worth knowing while you read it: the year character is a rounder, fatter o rather than a zero, which is the most common misread on these tags.

Does Balenciaga use a date code?

Not in the Louis Vuitton sense. What people call the Balenciaga date code is a single letter on the interior tag, and it gives the season and the year the bag was made, Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter, from Fall/Winter 2003 on. It sits inside a longer number with a style number, a color number and a production line number, and only the letter carries the date. Because the alphabet has run more than once, some letters point to two seasons.
