How to Tell If a Chanel Bag Is Real:
The Key Authentication Markers
Real
Fake
CC logo orientation on all hardware
The interlocking CC clasp on the vast majority of authentic pieces follows a consistent rule: the left C overlaps the right C on top, and the right C overlaps the left C on the bottom. This orientation appears on every piece of hardware — clasps, buttons, coin purse closures. Fakes frequently violate this. It takes seconds to check and eliminates a large percentage of obvious counterfeits.
Real
Fake
Quilting stitch count and diamond proportions
The Chanel diamond quilt pattern has specific proportions and a consistent stitch count that varies by bag size and line. On authentic pieces, the machine stitching is exceptionally precise – even tension throughout, clean alignment where diamonds meet at seams, and uniform depth across the entire surface. Inconsistent diamond sizes, uneven depth, or stitching that doesn't align cleanly at seams are common signs of a fake.
Real
Fake
Chain-leather strap construction
The interwoven chain-and-leather strap on Chanel bags is technically demanding to replicate. On authentic pieces, the leather threading is precise, the chain links have a specific weight and finish, and the way the chain exits the leather at each loop is clean. Fakes often show bunching, glue marks at the weave points, or lightweight chain.
Real
Fake
Leather quality: lambskin vs. caviar
Lambskin is buttery-soft, smooth, and matte — it picks up fingerprints easily and shows wear quickly. Caviar is pebbled, semi-glossy, and scratch-resistant. Both have a specific weight, smell, and flexibility that differs from the PU leather and coated materials used in replicas. Counterfeit lambskin often feels slightly tacky or shows a plastic sheen.
Real
Fake
Interior lining and "CHANEL" stamp
The interior lining material varies by era and line – grosgrain ribbon trim and fabric linings each have specific textures and finishes that Chanel has used consistently within particular periods. The "CHANEL" heat stamp uses a specific gold-foil typeface with consistent letter spacing, font weight, and alignment. Replica stamps are typically too bold, too thin, or slightly misaligned – and the foil quality is often visibly different under close inspection.
Chanel authentication involves: verifying the serial number format matches the bag's era, checking the CC logo orientation on all hardware (left C overlaps right C on top), examining the quilting stitch count and diamond proportions, assessing the leather quality and type (lambskin vs. caviar), reviewing the interior lining and stamp typography, and evaluating the chain-leather strap construction. For any Chanel bag above $1,000, professional authentication is strongly recommended.
Locate the holographic sticker inside the bag — usually on the inner back wall or on a small leather patch. The number format indicates the production era: 7-digit numbers run from 1986–2005, 8-digit numbers from 2005–2021. As of 2021, Chanel moved from stickers and matching authenticity cards to a microchip system. Cross-reference the number format and any sticker security features against the bag’s physical characteristics — hardware style, lining material, and strap construction should all be consistent with the era the number indicates. Note that serial cards are heavily counterfeited; the card alone is not proof of authenticity.
From 1986 to 2021, Chanel included an authenticity card with each bag, bearing a serial number that matches a holographic sticker inside the bag. The card has specific characteristics by era: card stock quality, holographic overlay design, font, and serial number format all changed over decades. Authentic cards from the same era as the bag will match these specifics. Since 2021, Chanel has used a microchip system instead of stickers and cards. Replica authenticity cards are widely available — a card must always be verified alongside the physical bag.
The fastest checks: (1) Verify the CC logo orientation on the front clasp — on authentic bags, the left C overlaps the right C on top. (2) Check the quilting — diamonds should be even in size and depth, with stitching that aligns cleanly at seams. (3) Feel the leather — authentic lambskin is very soft and matte; authentic caviar is pebbled with slight resistance. (4) Check the serial number format against the bag's era. For a reliable verdict, use a professional authentication service.
Chanel boutiques do not authenticate pre-owned items purchased elsewhere. This is standard practice across the luxury industry. Independent authentication services like LegitGrails provide documented, expert verification for second-hand Chanel pieces.
LegitGrails authenticates all Chanel handbag lines: Classic Flap, Boy Bag, 2.55 Reissue, WOC (Wallet on Chain), Gabrielle, 19 Bag, Coco Handle, Deauville, GST (Grand Shopping Tote), and seasonal collections. We also authenticate Chanel small leather goods, jewelry, shoes, sunglasses, and cosmetic products.
Chanel Serial Number Check:
What the Number Actually Tells You
Chanel began inserting serial number stickers inside bags in 1984, and the format has changed significantly over the decades. Understanding what to look for — and what the number cannot tell you — is essential for anyone performing a Chanel authenticity check.
Serial number formats by era:
1984–1986 (6-digit): Plain white sticker with basic black print, no hologram or logo. Accompanied by an authenticity card matching the serial number.
1986–2005 (7-digit): Starting with "0" from 1986, the first digit progressed chronologically through the decades. Security features were added incrementally – logo backgrounds in the late 1980s, holographic stickers from around 1997, and by 2000–2005 additional features including X-cut tape and gold and blue speckles.
2005–2021 (8-digit): Chanel transitioned to 8-digit serial numbers in 2005, continuing this format through to 2021. Security features from the later 7-digit era carried over and continued to evolve.
2021–present: Starting in April 2021, Chanel replaced serial number stickers and matching authenticity cards with a microchip system, with authentication details digitally embedded.
What the serial number cannot prove alone:
The serial number and authenticity card are among the most heavily counterfeited elements of a Chanel bag. Replica cards are widely available and routinely paired with fake bags. A serial number that falls within the correct range for the bag's apparent era is necessary but not sufficient. Our authenticators cross-reference the number format, sticker security features, card holographic quality, and font against the bag's physical characteristics.

Expert Chanel authentication online —
certified specialists covering every model, every era
Chanel is one of the most counterfeited luxury brands on the planet, and the fake market has become extraordinarily sophisticated. So-called "superfake" Chanel Classic Flaps — made with similar-quality lambskin and convincing serial number cards — now regularly fool buyers who paid $5,000 or more. The consequence: a Chanel authenticity check that goes beyond surface appearance has become essential for anyone buying pre-owned.
At LegitGrails, our Chanel authenticators are trained on the specific details that separate genuine pieces from even the highest-quality replicas: CC logo orientation, serial number format by era, quilting stitch count, hardware weight, and lining quality. We've processed thousands of Chanel authentications and maintain a continuously updated reference database of authentic items and known counterfeits across all Chanel product lines.
