What a Chanel serial number actually tells you

A Chanel serial number check starts with the leading digits: a Chanel serial is a running number, and those digits give the series. A seven digit code reads its first digit, an eight digit code its first two, so 10097628 is the 10 series and points to 2005 to 2006. Series were issued as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most straddle two years, which is why what people call a Chanel date code returns a window here rather than a single year. From May 2021 the sticker and the paper card began to be replaced by a metal plate with a chip in it, and the last series, 32, ran on into 2022 on small leather goods. The plate is not a series and nothing published reads a year out of it.

The series places a bag in a production window. It does not prove the bag is genuine, and the handbook this page uses says so in as many words: a genuine code does not mean the bag is genuine, because real stickers have been found transplanted onto counterfeits. The sticker itself carries more signal than the number on it: the font, the cut lines through it, and how it is applied all changed over the years, from no cut line to two crossing cuts to the four on current bags.

A Chanel series is a production window, not a year. The series were issued as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most of them straddle two years and the honest answer is the span.

WHERE TO LOOK

Where the serial number sits on your Chanel

Bags

On a sticker inside the bag, usually under the flap or inside a pocket and protected by a clear film, often on the same panel as the CHANEL MADE IN ITALY heat stamp. Read the digits off the sticker and nothing else. The bag came with a paper authenticity card carrying the same style of number, and from May 2021 both the sticker and the card were replaced by a metal plate set inside the bag, most often fixed to the interior or stitched into the lining, a flap or a pocket, so on a current bag that plate is what you will find instead.

a sticker can wear away or be lost without the bag being any less genuine, and the plate carries seven or eight letters and digits rather than a series, so there is nothing on it for this page to look up.

Wallets and small leather goods

Small leather goods carry the same sticker, usually inside a pocket or behind a card slot. This is also where the sticker lasted longest: the handbook records the plate arriving from May 2021 while some card holders kept a sticker and a card in a noticeably different typeface, and the last series, 32, ran on into 2022 on small leather goods. On a wallet on chain the plate is reported inside the zipped pocket.

the reading rule is identical, so a seven digit code reads one leading digit and an eight digit code reads two.

Shoes and sneakers

Our sources document the sticker serial for bags and small leather goods only. We have found no documented sticker serial for Chanel shoes, so there is no series to look up on a shoe and this checker cannot date one.

saying so is the honest answer here: we would rather tell you there is nothing to read than invent a rule for it.

NO CODE

If your bag has a plate instead of a sticker

From May 2021 Chanel began replacing stickers and paper authenticity cards with a metal plate carrying an embedded chip. It was a rollout rather than a switch, and the last sticker series, 32, was still going into 2022 on small leather goods, so a 2021 or 2022 piece may carry either. The plate carries seven or eight letters and digits rather than a series, and no published source reads a year out of it. The chip inside it is not something you can scan either: the resale houses that handle these bags say it answers only to Chanel's own equipment in a boutique, and the professional handbook describes the plate in detail without publishing any way of reading the chip at all. On older bags the sticker is usually under a flap or inside a pocket, protected by a clear film, and it can be lost without the bag being any less genuine.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Chanel serial number questions

The things people actually ask us about Chanel serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

How do I read which series my bag is?

Drop the last six digits and read what is left. A seven digit serial has one leading digit, an eight digit serial two. So 1150336 is the 1 series and 10097628 is the 10 series. The professional handbook states this as its own step, and it is the whole of the reading rule.

Why does the checker give me two years instead of one?

Because Chanel issued each series as stock ran out rather than on a calendar, so most series straddle two years. The source we use calls its own table approximate, and a single year would be a guess dressed up as an answer.

Is my bag a seven digit sticker, an eight digit sticker or a plate?

Count the digits, then look at the sticker itself. Up to the 10 series in 2005 the codes run to seven digits and from the 10 series to eight, but that is a reading rule rather than a new system: the handbook treats the stickers as one continuous line and marks the generations by the sticker, whose cut lines go from none, to two crossing cuts, to the four on current bags. From May 2021 the sticker and the paper card give way to a metal plate inside the double C hardware, and the 32 series still turned up in 2022 on small leather goods and card holders.

My bag has a metal plate, not a sticker.

Then it is from 2021 or later. Chanel began replacing stickers and paper cards with a metal plate in May 2021, though the sticker did not stop dead: the 32 series ran on into 2022, mainly on small leather goods.

Does a genuine serial number always mean a genuine bag?

No, and the handbook we use puts it bluntly: a genuine code does not mean the bag is genuine, because real stickers have been found lifted off genuine bags and stuck onto counterfeits. It has a name in the trade, label swapping. So confirm the number first, then judge the sticker itself, the font, the cut lines through it and how cleanly it sits under its film, and then the bag.

My serial has more digits than expected.

Check you are reading only the sticker and not a repair or boutique reference. Chanel serials run six to eight digits, and anything longer is usually a different number entirely.

Did Chanel ever publish this chart?

No. Chanel has never published an official serial reference, and its own anti-counterfeiting page says why in as many words: it will not give the public detailed information on identifying genuine products, because counterfeiters would use it. Every chart in circulation, including the professional handbook this page uses, is compiled from observed bags, which is why the answers are windows.

Can two bags share a serial?

They should not, but the series is shared by everything made in that run, so two bags from the same period will have very similar numbers. That is normal.

How far back do Chanel serial stickers go?

Not as far as some charts say. The handbook's first row is open at the bottom and says only “before 1989”. The independent references that do give a floor mostly put the earliest 0 series at 1986 to 1988, and what comes before it is a rarer six digit sticker that one reference dates to 1984 and the others place only in the mid 1980s. This checker now reads the earliest band as about 1986 to 1988 rather than from 1984, because 1984 is a single source and it attaches that year to the six digit format rather than to the 0 series. A bag made before the stickers began carries none, and that is normal rather than a fault.
