ROLEX CODE CHECK

Rolex serial number checker, date your watch, honestly

Enter the serial exactly as engraved, letter first if there is one.

This checker does not tell you whether your Rolex is genuine. A serial number can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Rolex authenticated by an expert

IN SHORT

What a Rolex serial number actually tells you

A Rolex serial dates the watch, approximately. Numbers ran in sequence from 1926 to mid-1987, then a letter prefix covering one or two years each until 2010, and from 2011 the serials are randomised and carry no date at all. Rolex restarted numbering from a low number in 1954, so a six-digit serial can belong to two different decades and this checker returns both.

A serial places a watch in a year or two, if the serial is genuine. It proves nothing on its own. Rolex has never published these charts, they are reconstructions from observed watches, so every answer here is approximate. What actually settles a Rolex is the movement, the dial printing and the case finishing, none of which can be read from a number.

Rolex restarted its numbering from a low number in 1954, so a six-digit serial can belong to two completely different decades. The checker returns both rather than picking one. The published year charts are also reconstructions from observed watches, not something Rolex publishes, so treat every answer as accurate to about a year. The published charts also contradict themselves in a few places, listing a later year with a lower serial. Those spans are returned as windows rather than resolved to a year.

WHERE TO LOOK

Finding the serial number on your Rolex

1987-2010 Engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock side, under the bracelet. From 2005 it also appears on the rehaut, the inner flange between dial and crystal. The letters were issued in sequence, so each one covers one or two years and the next letter picks up where it left off. Some years carry two prefixes because one ran out mid-year, which is why K and P both sit in 2000. What cannot happen is a letter spanning a run that contains another letter whole: the published charts anchor each prefix to a starting serial, and those anchors only ever move forward.
1954-1987 Engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock side, under the bracelet. Rolex restarted numbering at about 23,000 in 1954, so this run overlaps the 1926 to 1953 one. Both are offered whenever a serial could belong to either.
1926-1953 Engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock side. The first run, ending in 1953 at about 855,000. The published chart repeats one serial across 1949 to 1951, so that span is returned as a window rather than a year.
2011+ On the rehaut only, the inner flange between the dial and the crystal, at 6 o'clock. The published charts run the letter prefixes to G in 2010 and mark every year from 2011 as random. The changeover itself happened during 2010, so a watch from late that year can already carry a randomised serial. Either way there is no date in a randomised serial and no chart can give you one. Anyone offering a year from a modern Rolex serial is guessing.
NO CODE

If your serial gives you nothing

From 2011 every Rolex serial is randomised, and the changeover ran through 2010, so a modern watch simply has no date in its number and no chart can supply one. Look on the rehaut, the inner flange between the dial and the crystal at 6 o'clock, which is where the serial moved to. On older watches it is engraved between the lugs under the bracelet, so the bracelet has to come off to read it.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Rolex serial number questions

The things people actually ask us about Rolex serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

Where is the serial number on a Rolex?

On older watches, engraved between the lugs at the 6 o'clock side, under the bracelet, so the bracelet has to be moved to read it. From around 2005 it also appears on the rehaut, the inner flange between the dial and the crystal, and from about 2008 the rehaut is the only place it appears.

Why does my serial give two different years?

Because Rolex restarted its numbering from about 23,000 in 1954. A six-digit serial can therefore belong to the 1926 to 1953 run or the 1954 to 1987 one. The number alone genuinely cannot separate them, so this checker returns both rather than picking.

My serial starts with a letter, what does that mean?

It is from 1987 to 2010. The letters were issued in sequence and the published charts anchor each one to a starting serial, so most cover a single year and the rest cover two. Where a prefix spans two years you get the window, not a guess inside it.

My Rolex has a random-looking serial and no year comes back, why?

Rolex randomised its serials completely, and the charts show the last dated prefix, G, running to 2010 and every year from 2011 as random. There is no date encoded in them, and any tool that returns a year for a modern Rolex serial is guessing.

How accurate are these dates?

Approximate, and deliberately presented that way. Rolex has never published a serial-to-year chart. Every chart in circulation, including the ones behind this page, is reconstructed from observed watches, so treat the answer as accurate to about a year.

Two charts gave me different years, which is right?

Possibly neither, exactly. The published charts even contradict themselves in places, most visibly around 1977 and 1978, which is why this checker returns a window across that span instead of choosing.

Does a matching serial mean my Rolex is genuine?

No. Serials are engraved on counterfeits too, and a correct-looking number on the wrong movement is a common combination. The movement, the dial printing and the case finishing decide it.

Can you date my watch from the reference number instead?

The reference identifies the model rather than the year, so it narrows a watch to a production window at best. Serial, reference, movement and case have to agree, which is what an expert check looks at.
