Cartier serial number checker, and when the number stopped meaning anything
Enter the serial engraved on the back of the case, in the order it appears. The order and the length are what tell the systems apart.
What a Cartier serial number actually tells you
A Cartier serial number dates the watch only if it was made before about 2009, and only if the number is long enough to carry a date. Up to then the first two digits are the last two digits of the production year, whether or not the number begins with a letter prefix, so AB94512 and 9412345 both read as 1994. A four or five digit all-digit serial is the pre-1970s format and encodes no year at all, and a six digit one has two published readings that the checker returns together. Around 2009 Cartier moved to a randomised serial with the digits first and two letters trailing, and that format carries no date either. The order of the characters and the length of the number are what tell the systems apart.
On a pre-2009 watch it gives you a production year, and that is all. It is not proof of authenticity: serials are engraved on counterfeits, and Cartier does not confirm this rule, so a year from this page is a well-supported reading rather than a fact from the manufacturer. Two of the three guides behind it also warn that two digits cannot fix a decade on their own, which is why the model and the movement have to agree with the answer. Its real value is contradiction. A serial reading 1994 on a model Cartier did not launch until 2015 is a genuine problem, and that kind of mismatch is what an authenticator looks for.
Cartier serial numbers era by era
| Era | What the marking looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| About 1980 to 2008, letters then digits | Two letters, then the two year digits, then the rest of the number | AB94512 → 1994 |
| About 1970 to 2008, six to eight digits | Digits only, six to eight of them, the first two being the year | 9412345 → 1994 |
| 1970s to early 1980s, six digits, the vintage reading | Exactly six digits, no letters | 941234 → 1970 to 1983 |
| Pre-1970s, four or five digits, no date encoded | Four or five digits, no letters | 12345 |
| The digits-then-letters shape, randomised | Digits first, then two letters at the end | 132798BX |

The two digits are only the LAST TWO of the year. They do not carry the decade and they do not carry the century, and the published guides say so in their own words: one warns that the same two digits repeat every hundred years and that you have to bring the model's design era, case material and movement to close the question, another that even where the rule applies you still need the approximate decade to tell a 1994 watch from a 1984 one. What narrows it is the shape of the number. A four or five digit all-digit serial is the pre-1970s format and carries no year at all. A six digit one has two published readings and this checker returns both, with the question that separates them: does the model, the case and the movement look like the year the digits give, or like a vintage piece?
Cartier reference numbers, and the markings with no year in them
A Cartier reference is not a serial and it carries no date. The full modern reference, the kind written CRWSSA0089, is never engraved on the watch at all: the caseback carries a four-digit case number, which identifies the model and is shared by every example of it, and the serial, which is unique to your watch. One dealer guide publishes the letter key below. No second source corroborated it and Cartier has never published one, so read it as a lead rather than as a rule. For eyewear and jewellery there is nothing equivalent to look up: those markings identify the model, the size and the metal, and no published source anywhere gives a year key for either.
| Part of the reference | What one dealer guide reads it as |
|---|---|
| CR | Cartier Reference. It technically starts every modern reference and collectors ignore it, so CRWSSA0089 and WSSA0089 are the same watch. |
| W | The W simply means watch. |
| The next character | The case material: S steel or titanium, G gold, J jewellery, usually gold with diamonds, 2 two tone, H high horology, P platinum. |
| The two after that | The model family: SA Santos, TA Tank, BB Ballon Bleu, PA Pasha, BA Baignoire, BL Ballon Blanc, CH Crash, CL Clé de Cartier, HY Hypnose, NM Drive, PN Panthère, RO Rotonde. |
Where the serial number sits on your Cartier
Watches
On nearly every Cartier watch the serial is engraved on the outside of the caseback, at the bottom or around the outer edge, so nothing has to be opened to read it. The four-digit case number is engraved there too, and which of the two sits above the other depends on the model: on a modern Tank the serial is below the case code, above or beside the SWISS MADE line, while on a Ballon Bleu it runs along the outer edge with the model number in the centre. Some models carry it between the lugs, so the strap has to come off, or on the inner case ring. Vintage Tank Louis Cartier and other early Tanks often carry their numbers inside the case, visible only with the back removed, sometimes as part of one longer combined reference and serial.
Two exceptions our per-era description does not cover. Some recent Santos de Cartier examples carry the engraving on the case flank or the lug area rather than the middle of the caseback, though only one guide says so and a fresh search on 2026-09-26 found no second. And on a few watches the number is on the movement instead, which needs a watchmaker. No published source documents a Cartier marking sitting under the strap itself.
Sunglasses and eyewear
Inside the temple arm, and occasionally on the bridge: a precisely etched sequence of roughly seven to ten characters. The same temple carries the model number, the sizing code and a country of origin marking such as Made in France.
These numbers identify the model, the colour and the size. We know of no Cartier eyewear number that encodes a date, and neither of the two guides that describe these markings in detail mentions one, so this checker returns no year for eyewear and no chart anywhere publishes one. There is also no public database to look an eyewear serial up in: only Cartier or an authorised retailer can confirm it.
Jewellery
Inside the band. On a Love bracelet the serial is engraved on the inner surface beside the word Cartier, the metal purity mark, 750 for 18 carat gold or 950 for platinum, and the size. Love bracelets have carried a serial since 1974, in three published shapes: one letter and five digits, two letters and four digits, or three letters and three digits. On a Juste un Clou or a ring the serial sits on the inner side of the bracelet or the shank, beside the same hallmark and the Cartier signature.
None of the four jewellery guides consulted reads any part of that engraving as a year, and none of them ties any of the three serial shapes to a period, so this checker returns no year for jewellery. What the marking does is identify the piece and confirm its metal.
Other items
A Cartier lighter carries its serial stamped on the base, beside Cartier Paris and Swiss Made. A Cartier pen carries an engraved serial of four to six digits, usually on the barrel band or the cap.
Neither is datable from that number. The specialist pen listings that do give a year take it from a separate date marking on the cap, not from the serial, and a specialist vintage-lighter dealer page carries no dating statement of any kind. Our material on both is dealer listings rather than reference pages, so read the formats as observation.
If your serial gives you no year
Three normal reasons. The likeliest is that the watch is from 2009 or later. Cartier randomised its serials around then and there is no date in them, so no chart and no tool can supply one, and anything that does is inventing it. Check the order of the characters: digits first with two letters at the end is the modern format. The second reason is a short number, four or five digits with no letters, which is the pre-1970s format and was never year encoded. The third is the pair 09 itself, the changeover year that no published guide pins, so the checker declines it rather than guess. The shape of the number is a weaker signal than the guides suggest, incidentally: catalogued Cartier watches from around 2000 and around 2008 already carry digits with two letters trailing, so that shape means there is no year to read rather than that the watch is recent. In every case the date comes from the warranty card or the boutique receipt. Cartier itself holds the records and does not publish them: its own guarantee pages describe the International Guarantee and the warranty card and offer no serial lookup, no production-date service and no archive extract. Third-party guides point people at a boutique or an authorised service centre, and that is their suggestion rather than a service Cartier advertises.
Cartier serial number questions
The things people actually ask us about Cartier serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
Where is the serial number on a Cartier watch?
Engraved on the outside of the caseback on nearly all of them, so unlike an Omega you do not need to open the watch to read it. The four-digit case number is engraved there too, and which sits above the other depends on the model: on a modern Tank the serial is below the case code near the SWISS MADE line, on a Ballon Bleu it runs around the outer edge with the model number in the centre. Some models carry it between the lugs or on the inner case ring instead, and early Tanks often carry it inside the case, visible only with the back off.
How do I tell a pre-2009 Cartier serial from a newer one?
By the order of the characters, and with less confidence than the published guides give it. Pre-2009, the guides say, the letters come first or there are no letters at all, as in AB94512; from about 2009 the digits come first with two letters trailing, as in 132798BX. That ordering is what this checker reads first, and it is the reason a trailing-letter serial gets no year. But it does not work backwards. Auction catalogues record the digits-then-letters shape on Cartier watches dated around 2000 and around 2008, so the shape tells you there is no year in the number rather than telling you the watch is recent. For an actual date, the warranty card and the model’s own production era do the work.
Which digits are the year, and do they give me the decade?
The first two digits, after any letter prefix, are the last two digits of the year. 94 is 1994, 00 is 2000, 08 is 2008. What those two digits cannot do on their own is fix the decade or the century, and two of the three guides behind this page say so outright: one that the same pair repeats every hundred years, the other that you still need the model's approximate decade to tell a 1994 watch from a 1984 one. The length and shape of the serial narrow it, and the model, the case and the movement close it. That last step matters more than it sounds, because a year this page returns should sit inside the years your model was actually made. If it does not, the number is not carrying a date. Auction catalogues, the only public source of dated Cartier case numbers, do not visibly show the two-digit-year pattern in their own records, which is the strongest reason to treat a year from this page as a reading to corroborate rather than a fact. The table also stops at 08 deliberately, because 2009 is the changeover year and no source pins it.
My serial is four or five digits and no year comes back. Why?
Because that is the pre-1970s format and it was never year encoded. The guide that documents this shape is explicit: four to five digits, no letters, sequential only, no year in the number. The guide that publishes the year table puts the serials it covers at six to ten characters, so a short number sits below the range that table addresses. A tool that returns a confident modern year for a four or five digit Cartier is reading a production sequence as a date. Watches like that are dated by the model, the case, the movement and any paperwork that survives.
Can Cartier tell me the year?
In principle, yes, but not through anything you can request by serial number. Cartier keeps its production records internally and publishes none of them, and nothing public, including this page, has access to them. Be precise about what Cartier does offer: its own guarantee pages cover the International Guarantee, which applies only to pieces bought from a Cartier boutique, an e-boutique, phone sales or an official retailer, and the warranty card that comes with the order. There is no archive extract, no production-date lookup and no serial-verification product anywhere on them. Unlike Omega, Longines or Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cartier sells nothing of that kind. Third-party guides suggest taking the watch to a boutique or an authorised service centre, which is their suggestion and not a Cartier service. The card and the receipt are the paperwork that carries the date.
Is the serial the same as the reference number?
No. The reference identifies the model, the case and the dial, and it does not encode a production year. The serial is the individual number for that watch. They are often confused, and entering a reference here will not return a date.
Does a valid serial mean my Cartier is genuine?
No. Counterfeits are engraved with serials, often ones that decode to a plausible year, because the rule on this page is public. Worse, counterfeit operations have been documented taking genuine serial numbers off real watches that were sold publicly and engraving those onto fakes, so a number that decodes cleanly can still belong to another watch entirely. What is hard to fake is agreement between the serial, the reference, the movement and the case finishing, and that is what an expert check examines.
Does this checker work on Cartier jewellery or sunglasses, or watches only?
Watches only, and that is not a gap anyone can close. The rule this page uses is a watch serial rule. A Love bracelet or a Juste un Clou carries a serial inside the band beside the metal hallmark and the size, and Cartier eyewear carries a serial with a model number and a size code inside the temple arm, but no published source reads a year out of either, and no dealer or authenticator publishes a year table for Cartier jewellery or eyewear at all. Cartier has never published its serial system: what exists for the watches is collector work, and for these other products not even that exists. Where each marking sits is set out above. Anything that returns a production year from a Cartier bracelet or a pair of Cartier glasses has invented it.
