Van Cleef serial number checker, read with the stamps around it
Type the serial engraved on your Van Cleef & Arpels piece, such as JB 109803, or the VCAR reference from the certificate, such as VCARA45900. VCA and Au750 can be left off.
What a Van Cleef & Arpels serial number actually tells you
This Van Cleef serial number checker reads the number the way it is engraved. A Van Cleef & Arpels serial number is engraved on the piece, usually beside VCA or Van Cleef & Arpels and the gold mark Au750. On current jewelry it reads J, one more letter and six digits, such as JB 109803. Older pieces carry BL or CL and four to six digits, and vintage American pieces N.Y. and four or five digits. The serial is individual to the piece and the certificate should repeat it. Van Cleef & Arpels publishes no decode and no online lookup, so this checker tells you whether the number has a shape documented on genuine pieces, and what to check around it. A reference number starting VCAR is different: it names the model and sits on the paperwork, not on the piece. Neither one can tell you whether a piece is genuine.
It tells you the number has a shape we have documented on genuine Van Cleef & Arpels pieces, and for a reference number, which model it names where we know it. That is a floor, not a verdict. Serials are copied from listings and certificates, so a well-formed number on a fake is common, and the same serial on two pieces is a reason to look harder. What deserves attention is disagreement: a serial that differs from the certificate, a reference that names a different model from the one you hold, or a signature that reads Van Cleef alone. The engraving itself matters as much as the number. Dealers who handle these pieces point to shallow or blurred engraving, uneven spacing, a Vendôme column in the logo with no detail, uneven border beads and rough polish. Worn marks on a used piece are normal, so none of this settles it alone. Van Cleef & Arpels's own authentication service, or a photo review by our authenticators, is what does.

What a genuine Van Cleef & Arpels engraving shows
A genuine piece carries more than a number. Expect the signature, VCA or Van Cleef & Arpels in full, a gold or platinum mark, and the serial. Pieces marked in France add the eagle's head for gold, or the dog's head for platinum, and a maker's mark in a lozenge, and recent pieces often carry Swiss marks and the international Convention mark too. The serial shapes below are the ones we can read. None of them is a date, and Van Cleef & Arpels offers no public lookup, so the useful checks are whether the serial matches the certificate and whether the stamps around it are crisp and complete.
| Mark | What a genuine piece shows | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Signature | VCA or Van Cleef & Arpels in full. Vintage American pieces read Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y. The current logo puts the Vendôme column between VC and A | Van Cleef alone, or a column with no internal detail |
| Metal | Au750 or 750 for 18 karat gold, Pt950 for platinum | A silver body. Van Cleef & Arpels works in gold and platinum |
| French hallmark | The eagle's head on 18 karat gold marked in France, the dog's head on platinum | Pieces under 3 grams are exempt, and Swiss marked pieces may show other marks, so absence alone is not a red flag |
| Maker's mark | Initials and a symbol in a lozenge. Auction houses record the house's own VC column A mark and workshop marks such as CP with a star and crescent | A blurred or oversized lozenge |
| Serial | J and a letter and six digits on current pieces, BL or CL and digits on earlier ones, N.Y. and digits on vintage American ones | A serial that differs from the certificate, or one you have seen on another listing |
| Part | Example | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Letter prefix | JB in JB 109803, CL in CL 31306 | J and one more letter on current pieces, BL or CL on earlier ones. Van Cleef & Arpels does not publish a meaning, and the letters do not name the kind of piece |
| Number | 109803 | Individual to the piece. With the letter prefix, it is the serial the certificate should repeat |
| N.Y. letters | N.Y. in N.Y. 12829 | Vintage pieces signed Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y., followed by four or five digits |
| Reference prefix | VCAR in VCARA45900 | Marks a reference number, which is printed on the paperwork, not engraved |
| Model code | A45900 | The model in a given metal and stone, the same on every piece of that model |
| Piece | Where the stamps sit | What you should find |
|---|---|---|
| Alhambra necklace or bracelet (Vintage, Sweet, Magic) | The small plate by the clasp, both faces. Some also on the back of a motif | VCA Au750 on one face, the serial on the other with the lozenge and eagle's head |
| Alhambra earrings | The clip or post backs | VCA Au750 and the serial, on our photos on the clip back |
| Rings, including Perlée and Frivole | The shank. Dealers disagree on inside or outside | VCA Au750, the size and the serial. Check both sides |
| Perlée bangles and Frivole pendants | No source we found names a fixed place | Look inside the band or on the back, and compare with the certificate |
| Vintage pieces signed N.Y. | Beside the signature, on the back or the clasp | Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y. and N.Y. with four or five digits |
| Older Paris pieces | The back, the clasp or under the setting | The signature and five digits, sometimes with a dot. The checker does not read these |
| Certificate or boutique card | Printed, not engraved | The serial, which should match the piece, and a VCAR reference naming the model |
| Reference | Model |
|---|---|
| VCARA45900 | Vintage Alhambra pendant, yellow gold and mother-of-pearl |
| VCARF48400 | Vintage Alhambra bracelet, five motifs, white gold and mother-of-pearl |
| VCARO85600 | Sweet Alhambra bracelet, one motif |
| VCARP2V100 | Frivole pendant, small model |
| VCARP3K600 | Perlée signature bracelet, medium model |
Where the serial number sits on your Van Cleef & Arpels
Jewelry
On Alhambra necklaces and bracelets, a small plate hangs by the clasp. One face reads VCA Au750. The other carries the serial, here a current J shape, with a maker's mark in a lozenge and the French eagle's head beside it. Some bracelets and long necklaces repeat the serial on the back of a motif. On earrings, look at the clip back, and on rings, the shank.
This is the plate on an authentic Vintage Alhambra necklace from our photo database, with the last digits of the serial covered. Dealers and our own photos agree on the plate for necklaces and bracelets. For rings they disagree on inside or outside the shank, so check both.
If your number does not read here
We read only the shapes that at least two independent sources document on genuine pieces, so a number we cannot read is not a sign of a fake. Older pieces made in Paris often carry five digits alone, sometimes with a dot, and some 1970s Alhambra sautoirs carry a short code such as B4050 C33. Both are documented at auction, but too few or too plain for us to read safely. A few other shapes, such as CF and digits, turn up at a single auction house only. Watches use their own case numbers, and a jewelry checker does not read them. Some clasps and bracelets also carry a second short stamp such as R and four digits, which is not the serial. If your piece shows only part of a number, or the engraving is worn, compare it with the certificate rather than with this checker, and look at the stamps around it, listed below.
Van Cleef & Arpels serial number questions
The things people ask about Van Cleef & Arpels serial numbers, answered from the sources this page is built on.
Where is the serial number on Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry?
On Alhambra necklaces and bracelets, look at the small plate by the clasp. One face reads VCA Au750 and the other carries the serial, often beside a maker's mark in a lozenge and the French eagle's head. Some bracelets and long necklaces also carry it on the back of a motif. On earrings it is on the clip back, and on rings on the shank, inside or outside depending on the model, since dealers disagree. The certificate or boutique card that came with the piece should print the same serial.
What does a Van Cleef & Arpels serial number look like?
On current pieces, J and one more letter, then six digits, such as JB 109803. Every authentic piece in our photo database carries that shape, and so do recent pieces sold at Bonhams, Sotheby's and Christie's. Earlier pieces carry BL or CL with four to six digits, such as CL 31306, and vintage pieces signed Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y. carry N.Y. and four or five digits. Older Paris pieces often show five digits alone.
Can I tell what year my piece was made from the serial number?
Not reliably. Van Cleef & Arpels publishes no key. Charts that read a year from the two letters circulate among resellers, but the one we traced says itself that it is not official, it leaves out the CL prefix, and at least one dated purchase does not fit it. The certificate or receipt dates a purchase far better than the letters do.
What is a VCAR number?
It is the reference number, and it is not a serial. VCAR and six letters or digits, such as VCARA45900, name a model in a given metal and stone, here a Vintage Alhambra pendant in yellow gold and mother-of-pearl. It is printed on the certificate or boutique card and on vancleefarpels.com, not engraved on the piece. Use it to check that the model on your papers is the piece you hold.
Can I do a Van Cleef serial number lookup online?
Not against Van Cleef & Arpels's own records. The house offers no public lookup, and its boutiques do not check pieces on the spot. A VCA serial number check online can tell you only whether the number has a shape documented on genuine pieces, which is what this checker does. The record check itself is Van Cleef & Arpels's paid authentication service.
What is on a Van Cleef certificate of authenticity?
The certificate or boutique card that comes with a new piece prints the serial number, which should match the engraving character for character, and a VCAR reference that names the model. The boutique cards in our photo database also show the boutique and the date of purchase. A certificate can be copied as easily as a number, so it supports a piece rather than proving it.
Does a valid serial number mean my Van Cleef & Arpels is real?
No. Counterfeiters copy real serials from listings and certificates, so a well-formed number proves very little. A number that does not match the certificate deserves a closer look, and so does a signature that reads Van Cleef alone. The engraving, the beads, the polish and the setting are what settle it, and that takes a trained eye or Van Cleef & Arpels's own service.
Can Van Cleef & Arpels check my serial number?
Not on the spot. Its Japanese site says boutiques do not give an expert diagnosis in store, and that every piece comes with a certificate when bought from a boutique or the official website. For a piece you already own, Van Cleef & Arpels offers an authentication service with archive research and a technical study. Its US site gives the price as $1,730 including taxes and the time as up to six months, checked on October 20, 2026.
Should my piece have the French eagle's head?
Usually, if it was marked in France. The eagle's head is the French mark for 18 karat gold, beside a maker's mark in a lozenge. Its absence alone does not mean a fake. French law exempts gold and platinum pieces under 3 grams from the guarantee mark, though the maker's mark is still required, and recent pieces sold at auction often carry Swiss marks and the international Convention mark as well as or instead of French ones. Platinum marked in France carries a dog's head instead.
Is a piece signed Van Cleef alone a problem?
Yes, it deserves a close look. Genuine pieces are signed VCA or Van Cleef & Arpels in full, and vintage American pieces Van Cleef & Arpels N.Y. Resale guides from Fashionphile and TheRealReal both say a partial signature such as Van Cleef is not what the house engraves.
What do fakes commonly get wrong on the engraving?
Dealers who buy and sell these pieces point to the same few things: engraving that is shallow, blurred or unevenly spaced, a logo whose Vendôme column has no internal detail, border beads of uneven size or spacing, a motif that is out of shape, rough polish on the sides and gaps around the stones. Some fakes are silver or set with cubic zirconia, which Van Cleef & Arpels does not use. Worn engraving is normal on a piece that has been worn for years, and stone color varies naturally, so judge these together, not one at a time.
Why does the checker not read my older Van Cleef & Arpels number?
Because we read only the shapes at least two independent sources document. Five digit Paris numbers are real, but any five digits would pass a shape check, so reading them would tell you nothing. A few 1970s and single house shapes have too few examples. Not reading a number is never a verdict on the piece.
