GUCCI CODE CHECK

Gucci serial number checker, the serial, and the tag that does give a year

Type either number. The serial from the leather tab tells you the style and the factory. The code on the black fabric tag inside the bag tells you the year.

How is the number laid out on the tab?

This checker does not tell you whether your Gucci is genuine. A serial number can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Gucci authenticated by an expert

IN SHORT

What a Gucci serial number actually tells you

A Gucci bag carries two different numbers and they answer two different questions. The serial on the leather logo tab identifies the style and the factory, and it encodes no production date, so any tool that turns that number into a year is guessing. The black fabric tag sewn inside the bag is the one that dates it: the three digits after its leading letter are a year group, running from 2014 to 2024. Type either number above and this page will tell you which one you have and what it can say.

A leather tab serial that matches the documented format tells you the structure is right. That number does not date the item and it does not authenticate it. Check the six-digit style number against your receipt, and look at the digits themselves, because Gucci's own design is where the real signal is: a double-line face where the 0 is thick at the sides and thin top and bottom, the 8 is smaller on top than underneath, and the 6 and 9 are exact mirrors of each other. The black tag adds a year, and nothing more. A year that fits the model is a floor, not a verdict, because a copied tag can carry a plausible number too.

WHERE TO LOOK

Finding the serial number on your Gucci

Two-row serial Reverse of the interior logo leather tab, usually sewn near the top of the lining or beside a zip, never on a side seam. The upper row is the style number, usually six digits identifying the design, and it is the number that should match your receipt. The lower row is the supplier code, closer to a batch number, and pieces from the same batch or factory can share it. Neither encodes a date. The row lengths are not fixed. On current pieces the whole code runs 10 to 13 figures, most often six over six or six over four. Older tags print a shorter style number split by a dot, and they run shorter overall. The whole face is a double-line design. The 0 is thick at the sides and thin top and bottom. The 1 has both a head and a foot. The 2, 3 and 5 each end in a comma-shaped terminal. The 4 carries a triangular serif on its right and a base. The 6 is short on top and long below, and the 9 is exactly its mirror. The 7 has a downturned serif on the head, a wide bar, a thin waist and a base. The 8 is smaller on top than underneath and reads as two zeros stacked.
Single-row serial Reverse of the interior logo leather tab, usually sewn near the top of the lining or beside a zip, never on a side seam. Wallets and Wallet-on-Chain styles commonly carry the code on a single row, style number first and supplier code after. It still carries no production date.
Black fabric tag The small black fabric tag sewn inside the bag, usually in the interior pocket or along a seam near the zip. This is the tag carrying the QR code, not the leather logo tab. The first three digits after the letter are the production year group. The QR code beside them is encrypted and Gucci's own app is the only thing that reads it, so the year comes from the printed number, not from scanning. Genuine tags are silk, the ink is pale blue and breaks up horizontally against the weave, and the printed face is coated so the top half often looks washed out.
NO CODE

If your bag has no black tag

The black fabric tag arrived on bags made from 2014, so a genuine older Gucci simply will not have one, and its serial alone will not give you a year. That is normal and it is not a fault. Several sites will still return a production year for a leather tab serial: there is no date encoded in that number, so any year they show you from those digits is invented. To date an older piece the route is the style number against the collection it belongs to. Two more things you may find and should not mistake for a date: the QR code on the black tag is encrypted and only Gucci's own app reads it, so nothing is lost by not scanning it, and the controllato card in the bag is a quality-control record rather than a production date.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Gucci serial number questions

The things people actually ask us about Gucci serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

Can I tell the year my Gucci was made from the serial?

Not from the serial on the leather tab, and be wary of any tool that says otherwise, because that number encodes a style and a factory rather than a date. You can from the black fabric tag inside the bag, if the piece is from 2014 or later: the three digits after its leading letter are the production year.

What do the two rows of numbers mean?

The upper row is the style number, six digits that identify the design, and it should match the style code on your receipt. The lower row is the supplier code, which works more like a batch number, so two bags made in the same batch can share it. Wallets and WOC styles often carry both on one row.

Where do I find the serial on a Gucci bag?

On the reverse of the interior leather tab carrying the logo, usually sewn near the top of the lining or beside a zip, and never on a side seam. On a current piece the whole code runs 10 to 13 figures across the two rows, most often six over six or six over four. Older tags print a shorter style number broken by a dot and run shorter overall, and this checker accepts those too. On belts it sits on the strap and follows a different structure: style, size, then factory.

What is the small black label inside my Gucci?

A silk care and identification label with its own tells: pale blue ink that breaks up horizontally against the weave, a coated face that often looks washed out at the top, and a code beginning with a letter.

Does a valid serial mean my Gucci is authentic?

No. Fakes carry correctly formatted serials as a matter of course. What separates them is the typeface and the stamping: genuine digits are a double-line face with consistent internal proportions, and copies almost always get the weight distribution wrong.

How do I date a Gucci piece then?

It depends which marking the piece has. If there is a black fabric tag sewn inside, the three digits after the letter in its code are the production year and this page reads them, from 2014 onward. If there is no black tag, the leather tab serial will not date it, and the route is the style number against the collection it belongs to. That is research rather than a lookup.

Can the QR code on my Gucci tell me the year?

Yes, but not by scanning it. The QR code itself is encrypted and only Gucci's own app can read it, so a normal phone scanner gets nothing. The year is in the number PRINTED on the same black tag: one letter, then three digits that are a year group. 033 or 034 is 2021, 035 or 036 is 2022, and the chart runs from 2014 to 2024. Type that number above. On a genuine tag the printing is thin and looks slightly faded against the black, and the code sits clear of the seam.

What is the controllato card that came with my bag?

A quality-control record, stamped by Gucci to show the piece passed inspection. It travels separately from the bag and is often missing on resale, so its absence proves nothing. It carries no production date either.
