Fendi serial number checker, place your bag by its markings
Tell us what is on the interior tag. The serial itself is optional, and all it does is check the format.
What a Fendi serial number actually tells you
Fendi does not publish how to read its serial, and the sources that try to read it do not agree, so this is a Fendi serial number check that places the era rather than the year. Here is exactly what is in dispute, stated plainly: one professional authenticators' handbook states that a modern Fendi code carries a three-digit group whose first two digits are the production year, and works that rule across nine examples from 2002 to 2020. Against that, not one resale or authentication authority we could find publishes any Fendi year rule, and testing the handbook's rule against dated listings matched one bag exactly and missed another. That is a real disagreement rather than a gap, and we will not print a year on the strength of it. What the markings do place is the era: a printed or embossed serial with no sticker is before 2004, a holographic sticker is 2004 to 2010, and a sewn-in fabric pouch holding an RFID chip is 2010 onwards. The changeover year in which a few genuine bags carry both markings is 2015, and only 2015.
The marking type places the bag in a period. It does not date it to a year and it does not prove it is genuine. The chip sealed inside the black tag can be read only by Fendi's own internal system, not by a boutique counter or an off-the-shelf reader, so a pouch being present tells you the era and nothing more.
Fendi serial numbers era by era
| Era | What the marking looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Before 2004, printed or embossed serial | A printed or embossed serial with no sticker | 8BR600ABC123456 |
| 2004 to 2010, holographic sticker | A holographic sticker carrying the serial | 8BR600ABC123456 |
| 2010 onwards, sewn-in RFID pouch | A sewn-in fabric pouch holding an eight-digit chip | 8BR600ABC123456 |
| 2015 only, the short transition | Both a sticker and a pouch present | 8BR600ABC123456 |

Where the serial number sits on your Fendi
Bags
On the back of the interior leather brand tag, printed or embossed across one, two or three rows. On a bag from the hologram years the serial is carried on a holographic label on that tag or on a small pouch beside it; from the mid-2010s the marking is the black fabric tag instead, which holds a chip. On vintage bags the code is more often on the lining fabric itself than on a leather tag.
The row count is not a tell on its own: the reference material records one, two and three rows as all normal. Read the black tag as a marking rather than a number, because the chip inside it is sealed in and readable only by Fendi's own internal system, so there is nothing on it for you or for us to look up.
Wallets and small leather goods
Look in the same places as on a bag: the back of an interior leather tag, and the inside of a pocket. We will not be more precise than that, because our reference material covers Fendi bags and says nothing at all about where the marking sits on a wallet, a cardholder or a pouch.
So treat anything you find on a small leather good as unverified by this page. Not finding a serial on one is not evidence about the piece. It is the limit of what is documented.
Sunglasses and eyewear
Nothing on this page reads Fendi eyewear. We hold no sourced material on the markings inside a Fendi frame, so we will not tell you where to look or what the characters there mean.
This page covers bags and small leather goods. The marking-type eras above are about interior bag tags and do not transfer to a pair of sunglasses.
If you cannot find any marking
Check the interior pocket, the leather tab and the seams. The readable serial is printed or embossed on leather, runs 15 to 17 characters, and its first six characters are the model code. The sewn-in fabric pouch is a different marking and not a second place to look for that serial: it holds an RFID chip, and the chip's number is not printed on the outside of it. So a serial printed on a fabric label, rather than a pouch containing a chip, is worth a much closer look.
Fendi serial number questions
The things people actually ask us about Fendi serial numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
Does a Fendi serial number have a date in it?
Possibly, and the sources disagree, so we will not print one. Here is the whole picture. A professional authenticators' handbook says a modern Fendi code has three or four parts, that one of them is exactly three digits, and that the first two of those digits are the production year: it reads 208 as 2020, 198 as 2019, 149 as 2014, 129 as 2012, 038 as 2003 and 029 as 2002, and it applies the same method when the parts are printed out of order. That is a specific, worked, internally consistent claim. Against it: no resale house, authentication service or reference guide we could find publishes any Fendi year rule whatsoever, and several state plainly that the digits are not decodable. When the rule was tested against dated listings it read a 2017 Peekaboo exactly right and read a clearly modern bag as a 2000 one. So the honest answer is that a year may well be in there and the public record cannot yet be trusted to read it, which is why this page returns the era instead. If our authenticators settle it against bags they have dated by other means, this page will say so and the tool will change with it. And if another tool hands you a confident Fendi year with no working shown, ask it where the rule came from.
Can I check my Fendi serial number online?
You can check what it places, which is the era, and you can check that its shape is right. That is what this page does, free and without a signup. What no online check can do for Fendi is verify the number against the brand's records: there is no public Fendi lookup, and the chip inside the black tag is readable only by Fendi's own internal system. So an online Fendi serial number check is a narrowing tool rather than a verdict, and anyone presenting it as a verdict is overselling it.
What does the sewn-in pouch mean?
It holds an RFID chip and it replaced the holographic sticker around 2010. The tag is heat-sealed along both sides rather than being a pouch you can open, and the chip inside it can be read only by Fendi's own internal system, not at a boutique counter and not with a reader you can buy. You can often feel the chip by pinching the tag between two fingers, which tells you it is there and nothing else.
My bag has both a sticker and a pouch.
The changeover year is 2015, and a few genuine bags made in it carry both. Outside 2015 the sources treat a sticker and a pouch together as near always fake, so it is worth a close look at the rest of the bag rather than a reassurance.
Where should the serial be?
The readable serial is on leather, in the interior pocket or on a leather tab, and it runs 15 to 17 characters with the first six as the model code. The sewn-in fabric pouch is not a second place that serial appears: it holds an RFID chip, and the chip's number is not printed on the outside of the pouch. Characters printed on a fabric label are the thing to look at more closely.
Can I read the chip with my phone?
No. Ordinary phones can sometimes sense that a chip is present but cannot read what is on it, and neither can a specialist reader you can buy: the reference material is explicit that only Fendi's own internal system reads that chip. So nothing you can do at home turns it into a number.
Does a hologram mean my Fendi is authentic?
No. Holograms are reproduced. The era it places the bag in has to agree with the model, the hardware and the lining.
My older Fendi has no sticker at all.
That is normal for bags made before 2004, which carry a printed or embossed serial and nothing else.
