Coach serial number lookup, the month and the year
Enter the code from the bottom line of the creed patch inside your bag. The dash is optional.
This checker does not tell you whether your Coach is genuine. A creed number can be copied onto a fake as easily as it appears on a real one, and only a professional authentication can settle that. Have your Coach authenticated by an expert
What a Coach creed number actually tells you
A Coach creed number made between 1994 and about 2006 reads left to right as month, year, plant and style. The first letter is the month, running A for January to M for December with the letter I skipped so it cannot be read as a 1. The digits after it are the year, one digit for 1994 to 2003 and two from 2004. The one code we will not settle for you is a single 0, because our two sources disagree about whether it means 2000 or 2004 and later, so the checker hands you both readings. The last letter before the dash is the plant, and the number after the dash is the style. Bags made before 1994, or after the creed lengthened around 2006, carry no readable date.
It gives you a manufacturing month and a style number, which is more than most brands encode. It proves nothing about authenticity on its own. Creed patches are among the most copied parts of a Coach bag, and a correct-looking code stitched into a bad bag is a common combination. What the code is genuinely good for is contradiction: a creed dated to 1998 on a style Coach did not make until 2010 is a real problem, and that is how an authenticator uses it.
Coach creed numbers era by era
| Era | What the marking looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1994 to about 2014, the readable creed | A month letter, one or two year digits, a plant letter, then the style number | K8P-9870 → October 1998, style 9870 |
| A single 0 year digit, the 2000 reading | A month letter, a single 0, a plant letter, then the style number | A0A-1234 → January 2000 |
| A single 0 year digit, the 2004 or later reading | A month letter, a single 0, a plant letter, then the style number | A0A-1234 → January 2004 or later |
| The longer creed, no published key | A letter, four digits, then the style number | B1980-38124 |
| 1970s and 1980s, before the creed carried a date | Digits only, no letters | 0431-361 |

Almost every year digit is unambiguous, because the single and double digit years are different keys: a creed reading 4 is 1994 and one reading 04 is 2004, and this checker treats them that way rather than guessing a decade. The single 0 is the exception, and our two guides contradict each other on it. One states that 2000 was given the number 0, that 2001 was 1 and so on, and that the format only changed to 04 in 2004. The other states that Coach did not use a zero year digit until 2004, so a leading 0 points to 2004 or later rather than to 2000. Neither is obviously wrong, so a creed reading 0 comes back with both readings and the question that separates them: do the style number, the hardware and the creed wording belong to 2000, or to the middle of that decade?
Finding the creed number on your Coach
If your creed has no readable date
Two normal reasons, neither of them a fault. A bag from the 1970s or 1980s carries a unique serial with no month, year or style in it, and the earliest bags often carry no number at all. From around 2006 the creed lengthened to a letter and four digits, and no public source documents what those digits mean, so nobody can honestly date one from the number. In both cases the bag is dated by its hardware, its lining, its hangtag and the wording on the creed itself.
Coach creed number questions
The things people actually ask us about Coach creed numbers, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
Where is the creed number on a Coach bag?
On the creed, the rectangular leather patch sewn inside the bag that carries the Coach paragraph. The number is stitched or stamped on the bottom line, underneath the text. On some styles it sits inside a pocket rather than on the main lining.
What does each part of the creed number mean?
Taking K8P-9870: K is the month, October. 8 is the year, 1998. P is the plant that made it. 9870 is the style number, which identifies the model. So that creed is a bag made in October 1998.
Why is there no letter I in the month codes?
Because a capital I and the number 1 are easy to confuse on a stamped leather patch. Coach skipped it, so the run goes A to H for January to August, then J for September, K for October, L for November and M for December.
My year digit is a single number. Which decade is it?
For every digit except 0 the answer is exact. Coach used one digit from 1994 to 2003 and switched to two digits in 2004, so a single 4 is 1994 and 04 is 2004. They are genuinely different codes, which is why this checker does not have to guess between decades the way it does for some other brands. The single 0 is the exception and we will not pretend otherwise: one of our guides says 0 is 2000, the other says Coach never used a zero year digit before 2004, so a leading 0 means 2004 or later. The checker returns both readings and names which guide says which. The style number, the hardware and the creed wording will tell you which one fits your bag.
My creed is a letter and four digits. Why is there no date?
Because it is from about 2006 onwards, and no public source documents what those four digits mean. One reseller guide reads the first two as a year, and two other references state plainly that there is no key for this format. One source is not enough for us to put a date on your bag, so this checker names the format and stops.
What does the plant letter tell me?
Which factory made the bag, and nothing more. Coach has never published a list of what its plant letters stand for, so any site telling you a specific country from that single letter is filling in a gap rather than reading it.
My vintage Coach has no number at all. Is it fake?
Not on that basis. Bags from the 1960s and some from the 1970s were made before Coach put a number on the creed. Absence of a code is normal for that period and is not evidence of anything on its own.
Does a correct creed number mean my bag is real?
No. It raises the floor, it does not settle the question. Counterfeiters copy creed patches, including plausible codes. The useful test is whether the code agrees with the bag: the date, the style number, the hardware and the creed wording all have to belong to the same period.
