Hermès reused the alphabet across several cycles, so the letter alone is not enough. The shape drawn around it is what separates them: a plain letter can be roughly 50 years apart from the same letter in a circle. Look closely at the stamp: is there a circle or a square around it, or nothing at all?

IN SHORT

What a Hermès blind stamp actually tells you

A Hermès blind stamp, also called the date stamp, is a single letter that records the year the item was made. The letter alone is not enough, because Hermès ran through the alphabet several times, so the shape drawn around it decides which cycle you are in. A plain letter is 1945 to 1970 or 2015 onwards, a letter in a circle is 1971 to 1996, and a letter in a square is 1997 to 2014.

A blind stamp is a production marking, not a certificate. Hermès stamps are widely copied, and a stamp that reads correctly only tells you the marking is consistent with a given year. It cannot tell you that the leather, the stitching or the hardware are right. Treat a matching stamp as one signal that clears a low bar, never as proof.

HERMÈS BLIND STAMP FORMATS

Hermès blind stamps era by era

Era What the marking looks like Example
1945 to 1963, plain letter, first cycle A single letter with nothing drawn around it H = 1952
1964 to 1970, plain letter, no frame A single letter with nothing drawn around it T = 1964
1971 to 1996, letter inside a circle A single letter enclosed in a circle circle T = 1990
1997 to 2014, letter inside a square A single letter enclosed in a square square J = 2006
Late 2014 onwards, no frame A single letter with no frame, not in alphabetical order A = 2017, and a plain R = late 2014
More than one letter, the whole stamp Two or three letters, sometimes with digits AT, or HDA1234

WHERE TO LOOK

Where the blind stamp sits on your Hermès

Bags

On a Birkin or a Kelly the stamp sat on the underside of the lock strap, the tab the strap loops through, on every piece made before 2015. From about 2015 it moved inside, to the top edge of the interior side wall where the bag opens, usually the left gusset near the back flap. On other models the position varies, so check under the flap, on the interior leather and around the strap attachments. A blind stamp is pressed into the leather without ink, so tilt the piece to the light rather than looking at it straight on.

The move is confirmed for the Birkin and the Kelly by the professional handbook, which states it twice, and by four independent dealer and authentication references. What none of them supports is a clean cutover date: the references split between 2015 and 2016, and one of them reports the change phasing in on exotic skins first and two Kelly bags bought in the same year carrying the stamp in different places. So read it as a move that happened around 2015 rather than on a single date, and nothing describes the same move on any model other than the Birkin and the Kelly. Note also that the stamp in the photo carries several characters: only the single framed or unframed year letter belongs in the box.

Wallets and small leather goods

Inside, on the lining leather. Hermès wallets, card cases and coin purses carry a blind stamp in the same form as a bag, and the dealer references that describe small leather goods put it inside a pocket, most often in the cash slot of a wallet lining. Work through the interior leather, the area around the closure and under any flap, tilting the piece to the light.

That position comes from dealer and authentication references rather than from the professional handbook, which states outright that it does not publish stamp positions in its printed text. So it is a good place to start rather than a rule, and a stamp you cannot find on a small leather good is still more likely a gap in the published record than evidence about your item.

Belts

Hermès belts are stamped, and the handbook reads the impression on a belt by the same criteria it applies to a bag. For the position, dealer references point to the end of the strap, near the stitching, and on a reversible belt to the area around the buckle holes. Work along the reverse of the strap and the keeper, tilting the leather to the light.

The buckle carries its own separate marks: the HERMES lettering engraved on it and, on belts from roughly the last five years, an alphanumeric code on its back. Neither of those is the year stamp, and neither belongs in this checker. The strap position comes from dealer references rather than from the handbook, which prints no stamp positions at all.

Shoes and sneakers

No reference material we could find documents a blind stamp position on Hermès shoes or sandals. Neither handbook covers footwear at all, and a sweep of the dealer and authentication references turned up nothing beyond generic advice about the lettering on the insole, which is not a year code. If your pair does carry a single stamped letter, the checker reads it against the same year table as a bag, but we cannot tell you where to look and we will not guess.

A style and size marking inside a shoe is not a year letter. Enter only a single letter, framed or unframed.

Scarves

There is nothing on a scarf for this checker to read, and that is now a checked answer rather than a gap. A blind stamp is pressed into leather; neither professional handbook covers Hermès silk, and a sweep of the dealer and authentication references found not one describing an embossed letter or a year code on a scarf. A scarf is placed by its design name, its care and composition label, the copyright wording printed on it and the direction of its hand-rolled hem, none of which is a code you can type.

The honest answer is the useful one here: there is no date stamp to hunt for, so not finding one says nothing at all about the piece.

Watches

This page reads the blind stamp on Hermès leather goods. An Hermès watch is not marked that way: it carries case and reference numbers on a different system from its watch division, and we hold no sourced table for them. Nothing here will date an Hermès watch.

An Hermès watch on a leather strap can still carry a blind stamp on the strap itself, which dates the strap and not the watch. Those are separate items with separate dates, and a replacement strap is normal.

NO CODE

If you can't find a stamp at all

Hermès stamp placement moved around 2015. On a Birkin or Kelly made before then, look on the underside of the lock strap; after the move it sits inside the bag, on the top edge of the interior side wall where the bag opens, usually the left gusset near the back flap. The changeover was gradual rather than a single date, so a 2015 or 2016 bag can carry it in either place. Placement also varies by model, so on other styles check under the flap, on the interior leather and around the strap attachments. A stamp you cannot find is not evidence of a fake. It is usually evidence of looking in the wrong place for that model and era.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Hermès blind stamp questions

The things people actually ask us about Hermès blind stamps, answered by the team that reads them for a living.

What do the circle and square around the letter mean?

They tell you which cycle the letter belongs to. Hermès has run the alphabet four times: plain 1945 to 1970, circled 1971 to 1996, squared 1997 to 2014, and plain again from 2015.

My stamp has no shape around it. What does that mean?

Either it is vintage (1945 to 1970) or recent (2015 onward). Those two runs use overlapping letters, which is why the checker returns both rather than picking one: an unframed A is 1945 or 2017, and nothing in the stamp itself separates them. Two things follow from the same change. After 2014 Hermès stopped running the letters in order, so a modern stamp has to be read from a lookup rather than counted along the alphabet. And a plain R with no square around it is a known transition rather than a fault: 2014 should carry a squared R, but the frame began to be dropped inside that year, so the checker returns both 1962 and late 2014 for one. The rest of the bag settles it quickly, because hardware, lining and model tell you at once which end of the range you are at.

Does a correct blind stamp mean my Hermès is authentic?

No. Counterfeiters reproduce blind stamps. Authentication looks at leather grain, stitch angle and tension, hardware weight and plating, and the tooling of the stamp itself.

What are the other letters and numbers next to the year letter?

A craftsman code or a production number, and not a date. The professional authenticators' handbook we work from is blunt about it: accounts differ on what the rest of the code means, and the only thing it treats as settled is that the first letter is the year. Every dealer and authentication reference we checked says the same in its own words, that the characters identify the artisan or the atelier section and that only Hermès holds the directory. Not one publishes a key, so a page that offers you one goes beyond every available source. Only the single framed or unframed year letter records when the item was made.

The letter on my bag is faint or partly worn. Can I still read it?

Read the shape more carefully than the letter. A worn circle can pass for a square, and that moves the answer by about twenty-six years. If in doubt, choose “I'm not sure” and the checker returns every year that letter can mean.

How old is my Hermès bag?

The blind stamp is the fastest route to an answer. Find the single letter, note whether anything is drawn around it, and enter both above: a plain letter is 1945 to 1970 or 2015 onwards, a letter in a circle is 1971 to 1996, and a letter in a square is 1997 to 2014. That gives you the year the piece was made rather than the year it was sold. The range starts at 1945 rather than an estimate, for two reasons: our sourced year table prints Z as the last year before the circles begin, in 1970, and a 26-letter run ending there has to start in 1945. Independent authenticator references give the same range.

Is the Hermès blind stamp the same as a serial number?

It is what people mean when they search for a Hermès serial number, yes, though Hermès does not call it that. The marking goes by blind stamp or date stamp, it is pressed into the leather without ink, and it is a year letter with craftsman characters beside it rather than a running serial. So there is no Hermès serial number to look up in a register, and the letter is the part that carries a date.

Did the blind stamp move to a different place over time?

On the Birkin and the Kelly, yes. Until about 2015 the stamp sat on the underside of the lock strap, the tab the strap loops through. After that it moved inside the bag, to the top edge of the interior side wall where the bag opens, usually on the left gusset near the back flap. The professional handbook we work from states that move twice, and four independent dealer references describe the same thing. What none of them gives is a clean cutover date: some say 2015 and some say 2016, and one reports the change arriving on exotic skins first, with two Kelly bags bought in the same year carrying the stamp in different places. So treat it as a move that happened around 2015 rather than on a single date. Nothing describes the same move on any other model, so on other styles placement still varies and you check under the flap, on the interior leather and around the strap attachments.
