Celine date code checker, find the week and year
Enter the code stamped inside your Celine, letters and all.
What a Celine date code actually tells you
A Celine date code is a short stamp like F-SL-2241, pressed into the lining or a small leather tab inside the bag. The year sits in the 2nd and 4th digits, and the 1st and 3rd give the week of that year, so 2241 is week 24 of 2021. On codes from before mid 2014 references disagree about whether those two digits are a month or a week, and the checker shows both. The letters at the front are not part of the date.
A Celine date code is a production reference, not a serial number. The same code is stamped on many bags made that week, and the reading is a convention worked out by authenticators from dated pieces rather than something Celine publishes. Counterfeiters copy real codes: a professional reference prints a page of counterfeit stamps that sit in exactly the right layout and decode to sensible weeks, and fails them on the shape of the W and the 3. So a clean reading tells you the numbers are internally consistent. Where it earns its keep is as a contradiction test: a code that dates a bag to before the model existed, or an accented CÉLINE stamp on a piece the code places well after the 2018 logo change, is a reason to look much harder.
Celine date codes era by era
| Era | What the marking looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mid 2014 onward, week and year | One letter, two letters, then four digits, usually with dashes | F-SL-2241 → week 24 of 2021 |
| 2014, the year the reading changed | Same layout as the current code, with the year digits reading 2014 | S-CU-3144 → week 34 of 2014 |
| Before mid 2014, month and year | Same layout, with the year digits reading 2009 to 2013 | W-PA-0163 → June 2013 |
| Before mid 2014, read as a week (minority reading) | Same layout, read the way some guides read every Celine code | S-PA-0122 → week 2 of 2012 |
| Two lines of code, read from the top line | Two stamped codes, one above the other, typed together | F-AT-1290 F-CU-2210 → week 19 of 2020 |
| Older short codes, no published key | One or two letters and two digits, sometimes with a slash and more digits | CE00/15 |

Where the date code sits on your Celine
Celine date code location inside bags
Inside the bag, heat stamped into the leather lining or a pocket wall, or onto a small leather tab sewn into an inner or rear pocket. The tab is often the color of the outside of the bag rather than the lining, so it is easy to miss.
- Luggage, Trapeze, Phantom, Ava, Triomphe canvas
- Usually a small leather tab
- Classic Box, Belt Bag, Triomphe flap bags
- Usually pressed into the lining
Typical marking F-SL-2241
Every source agrees on the two placements, lining or tab, but the model by model split rests on a single guide, so use it as where to look first, not as a rule. Some bags carry two codes, one above the other.
Where Celine wallets and card holders carry the code
Inside a card slot or the coin pocket, in the same letter and digit layout as the bags.
Typical marking S-CU-3144
One published source gives this position and none contradicts it. A small item with no visible code is weak evidence either way.
Celine shoes: size and made in markings only
None of our sources documents a date code on Celine footwear. Shoes carry size and made in markings, which do not encode a date.
No date bearing code is documented for this category, so do not treat its absence as a fault.
Celine sunglasses arm markings
On the inside of the arm, printed as a model and color reference. None of our sources documents a production date in it, so this page cannot read one.
No date bearing code is documented for eyewear.
Celine clothing labels and date codes
Ready to wear carries style and care labels, and none of our sources documents a date code in them.
No date bearing code is documented for clothing.
If your Celine has no code, or it will not read
Look in every interior pocket first, including the rear one, and check both the lining and any small leather tab, which is often the colour of the outside of the bag. Pieces older than the current layout, which dates from about 2009, carry short markings or nothing at all, and that is normal. A professional reference also notes that some genuine codes were simply stamped wrongly by the craftsman and cannot be read by the rule, so an unreadable code is a reason for a closer look, not a verdict. No published source documents a chip in Celine bags, so do not expect one.
Celine date code questions
The things people actually ask us about Celine date codes, answered by the team that reads them for a living.
How do I read a Celine date code?
Take the four digits at the end and read them out of order. The 2nd and 4th digits are the year and the 1st and 3rd are the week of that year. F-SL-2241 is week 24 of 2021, and a worked example from professional reference material, U-LM-0271, is week 7 of 2021. It is the same skip-reading Louis Vuitton uses, which is why so many people read it left to right and get a nonsense date.
My code is from before 2014. Is it a month or a week?
References disagree, so the checker shows both. One professional reference says Celine only started counting weeks in the second half of 2014 and that earlier codes give the month: it photographs W-PA-0163 and dates it June 2013, and several published guides say the same. Other guides read every Celine code as a week, and one of them dates S-PA-0122 to the second week of 2012. The year is not in question, only the two digits beside it. A receipt, the season you bought it, or when the model came out usually settles it.
Where is the date code on a Celine bag or wallet?
On a bag it is heat stamped inside, either straight into the leather lining or a pocket wall, or onto a small leather tab sewn into an inner pocket. The tab is often the colour of the outside of the bag, not the lining. On wallets and card holders look inside a card slot or the coin pocket. Shoes, sunglasses and clothing carry no documented date code.
What do the letters at the front mean?
Nobody has published a reliable answer. Guides call the two letter pair a factory or location code, and the single letter before it is described as unknown; common ones on genuine bags include S, F, U and W. None of the professional references we use maps them to a place, so the checker reads the date and leaves the letters alone rather than guess a factory.
My bag has two lines of code. Which one do I enter?
Either works, or type both and the checker dates the piece from the top line. A professional reference says one row or two rows are both normal, and published guides say the top line is when production started and the bottom line when it finished. On that reference's two genuine two line stamps the second line reads two to four weeks after the first, which fits.
Is a Celine date code a serial number, and does a valid one prove my bag is real?
No to both. It is a date code shared by every bag stamped that week, so it cannot be looked up or registered. And a valid reading proves nothing on its own: professional reference material shows counterfeit stamps such as W-CU-3109 that decode to a perfectly sensible week 30 of 2019 and still fail, because the letters and digits are the wrong shape. Authenticators look at the depth, spacing and typeface of the stamp far more than at what it says.
CÉLINE or CELINE: what does the accent tell me?
Roughly when the piece was made. Celine dropped the accent from its logo in September 2018, so stamps reading CÉLINE belong to earlier pieces and CELINE to later ones. Pieces from around the change can carry either, so a 2018 or 2019 code with an accented stamp is ordinary. An accented stamp on a bag the date code places in, say, 2022 is a reason to look closer.
Why won't my code decode?
Usually one of four things. A misread digit: 0 and 8, 1 and 7, and 3 and 8 are easy to confuse in a pressed stamp, so photograph it in raking light. An older piece: before about 2009 Céline used short markings like CE00/15 or M93, which have no published key. A misprint: a professional reference says some genuine codes were stamped wrongly and cannot be read by the rule. Or a guide's shortcut: some sites read 0616 as week 6 of 2016 in plain order, but that rests on one unphotographed example and the professional references never use it, so we do not.
